I'm reading them in order. "The Vampire Lestat" (book 2) is directly influenced by "Interview With The Vampire" and "The Vampire Lestat" goes directly into "Queen of the Damned" and so on and so forth. I researched a little and everything I read stated to read them in order, so I am and would suggest it.Oh and Waldenbooks or Borders SHOULD have book 2 just check around.

I find that is it is necessary to read the Vampire Chronicles in order, because each book often has refrences to the ones before it and sets up the sceen for the ones after it. I feel the first three (Interview, Lestat and QOTD) MUST be read in order, while the others can be shuffled around a bit.

It's better to read them in order, otherwise the characters can get confusing. I think next is the Vampire Lestat, then Queen of the Damned. Tale of the Body Thief is in there somewhere, I never read that one..
The Vampire Armond
Pandora
The Mummy
Servant of the Bones
Memmnoch the Devil
These are all excellent books and don't have to be in any order.

The main three, no. In my opinion she spends TOO much time recapping. Interview and Lestat can be read at random times, but Queen of the Damned should probably be read after those. And I thought that 'The Vampire Lestat' was her best novel. And the rest of her vampire books do need to be read after you read the main three, in my opinion. It certainly makes them more interesting. And for instance if you read Memnoch (which was quite good) you definately need to know a lot about Lestat. so there you go.

I didn't care for The Vampire Lestat. Throughout the entire book I felt like I was wasting my time. A lot of it is Lestat mooning over Louis. Then most of the rest of it is mentioned later in other books.
You won't miss much if you miss that one. I think the only parts that I didn't find elsewhere are Lestats beginnings, being made by Marius. (I can't really remember, though, it's been a while)

No, it wouldn't matter all that much. There are occasional references to the other books in the future ones, but especially as you get into the new tales of the vampires (Pandora, Vittorio, etc.), they become less relevant. If you ahven't read them, Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake Vampire Hunter Novels are a good substitute once you've exhausted Anne Rice.

Anne Rice fills you in on the outline of what happened in Lestat at the beginning of Queen of the Damned, so not really, but you will miss some of the finer details.

No need to read them in order, I did not. You will enjoy them all. However, I would recommend reading Interview and Lestat first. Don't forget Pandora and those... all really good

It helps to read them in order, but you don't have to do that. Try your local bookstore or library for the second book. The library can do an inter-library loan or the book store could just order a paperback copy for you. Enjoy.
