Busby, Shankly and Ferguson (as if I need to mention their names!) Why don't England employ a Scottish Manager? Thicko Morris Dancers or just plain xenophobic? (providing they could find a Scotsman who wouldn't rather boil his own head!)

I totally agree. Scottish managers seem to have some unnatural ability to manage football even if Scottish players tend to be on the next to useless side of the fence.

The last three managers of the mighty Preston North End were Scottish. David Moyes became a club legend by getting us promoted to Division 1 (now the Championship) and took us to the playoff final, Billy Davies signed Dave Nugent and won two succesive playoff places. The less said about Craig Brown the better.

The FA however were right to appoint an English coach for the country. I personally think that the rules that apply to the players should apply to the coaches for the team so that we know that their heart is in the right place (England v Sweden with Sven in charge anybody?)

It doesn't matter what nationality the Manager is - you can still get results. Obviously it didn't work to plan having Sven as the England Manager but that doesn't mean England should stick to English managers in future.

Gus Huddink, Phil Scolari are 2 names that spring to mind when looking at foreign managers. As long as they have the credentials ie, good tactics, motivation, passion & desire they is nothing wrong with it. I can see England offering the job to a Scottish man if they thought he was good enough, but I just can't imagine a Scottish man taking it on - he would have to be a brave man & wouldn't want to step back into Scotland for a while!

As far as England appointing a Scottish Manager - I remember a while ago pre Sven maybe just after Hoddle left, Alex Ferguson's name was being touted around as was Arsene Wenger - both said "the job should go to an English man!!!"

Sort of agree. Shankly, though, really is not Liverpuddle's most successful manager. Gotta be Paisley probably...name looks Scottish but don't think he is.

But winning at club football is different than with a nat'l team. Fergie managed Scotland and did nothing. Jock Stein, who led Celtic to the 1967 Euro Cup, was OK as Scotland manager...not mindblowingly great really.

Let's get real. Would a Scottish manager, if asked, ever manage Land of Eng? Vicey versa.

Will never happen!

The Scottish have been jealous of Englands footballing success (compared to Scotland, England are waaaaay more successful), and as a result most Scots are anti-English when it comes to Football, and a lot of things really!

The Welsh are also anti-English.

Yet the English tend to support Wales and Scotland, unless they are playing against them.

So, in reality you are labeling the wrong nation as xenophobic

Looking at success on the field, espcially in Europe, I would rank the most successful as Bill Paisley, Alex Ferguson and Brian Clough.

I think both Clough and Joe Fagin won more European Cups than Busby.

As regards Shankly over rated who won very little compared to any of the above (more mouth than trophies)

I wonder what the Liverpool fans will do when Man Utd break their record in the next 10 years, which will happen without any doubts. I hope the answer "LIVERPOOL FC 18 TIME PREMIER LEAGUE WINNERS, WE'VE WON IT 5 TIMES" makes you feel better. I wish Arsenal had a great history so i can shout about something when facing failure for years to come.

What sensible Scotsman would want to manage the English football team? Let them find someone else.

I'd have Ferguson as England manager tomorrow. Prefer him to his sidekick anyway. Ferguson's a winner and we'd be successful under him (I don't CARE about what he did with Scotland in '86).

When was he offered the job temporarily?
