How much would you say they REALLY deserve to earn per week/year? Should the highest earners in la liga, serie A, Bundesliga or English premiership earn more than a Nurse / Fireman / Policeman etc

fuqutastic, don't be arsey. I mean in the grand scale of things does someone kicking a ball around once or twice a week merit a higher wage than someone who eases pain and at the same time works, say, 14 hours a day!!!!

YES without a doubt, also transfer fees should be capped. This way they teams all have the same advantages and disadvantages. The winning team would be the team that works best together.

The problem is that If you capped a players wages, The Clubs would just find another way of topping the wages up, Special insentives and the like.
I see your point with Firemen & Nurses but if the Clubs are prepared to pay these wages then there is nothing anyone can do about it.
It is galling that Footballers get paid so much for doing something that any ordinary Guy in the street just loves doing I mean we would ALL play for OUR Team for free if a crisis befell them.
I would anyway.
And when you see someone at your team who's getting paid these amounts of money and you don't think they are putting a real shift in, Well it drives you crazy
FFS I Support Partick Thistle so we ain't talkin a lot of money here, but I can imagine what it must be like for your Celtic, Rangers, Chelsea, Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal Etc. Etc.
I'd go aff ma heid

It's an old and mostly pointless argument that is answered every time someone buys a ticket. Each individual has a choice to keep his 35 quid (or whatever), or buy a ticket to watch a match. The television companies make a similar choice on a larger scale. Ultimately, if the game is able to bring in that kind of money, then the players deserve the lion's share of it.

Furthermore, with football being the only truly global game, no salary cap structure would work unless the entire world used the same structure. Otherwise, the best players would just migrate to the countries that offer the best pay. Which is the way it currently is anyway. Which means nothing changes.

I think so. If they're a really good player they can make good money from endorsements if not they can live off their wage from sitting on the bench. Granted they train and practice but I find that compared to say basketballers who play games a couple of nights a week they don't do much else.

I can see that the club would want to show it's appreciation to the players who help them make money but I guess the right thing to say is to give that money to a good cause if you've got so much floating around.

I reckon footballers should be paid a basic wage of 10k, and have their lodgings and kit paid for by the club. The Wags should have to go and make their own living, even if it is on page 3.

Or they can keep the salaries, but there should be a sniper hidden in the crowd at every match. This sniper would be allowed to take random cripple shots with high density rubber bullets - to the legs, arms, or buttocks, as the occasion dictates. I'd definitely watch football more often then!

:)

I assume you live in a capitalist country. What is with this "deserve" logic then? How much money does a fireman generate? How much time do you yourself spend on fireman related goods and activities? Now compare with how much you spend on entertainment like football?

Econ 101, baby. 35,000+ people on average don't pay to watch fires, crimes or a nurse assist in an operation.

Need to get a grip on that logic. Some ecoweenie may think eco activists deserve more than footballers whereas some bus drivers may think they deserve more. Where do you draw the line in your fairytale world?

Yes, I think they should be capped.
I think they should earn the same as an actor or singer. And they all should be way down the list, behind every profession that saves lives, prevents crimes and works in death defying professions to help the community. I also think that social workers and psychologists/psychiatric should earn more than them.
I think they shouldn't earn more than 25.000 per month, giving them a bit over 300.000 a year.

It's all relative, isn't it? Seems to me that if we lived in a world where everybody had access to food, water, healthcare and personal freedom, no one would care a damn about what footballers got paid. But if wealth distribution was equalised globally as this would require, then there probably wouldn't be the money for ridiculous wages in any sector. Welcome to capitalism...

My b/f was talking to grandpa about this because he's hurt his leg and can't go out at the moment. He says when he was a boy football was a game and he used to support Chelsea. Then big business stole it away from the supporters and changed it into spectator sport and sold it back to the people they had stolen it from at inflated prices. Grandpa can't watch it and he says other people shouldn't until they give it back.
