A friend has had to give up wine because of the effects that sulfites have on her sinuses. She tells me she has heard there are sulfite-free wines out there somewhere, but we haven't been able to find them in local stores.

It is extremely unlikely that sulfites are the problem unless your friend is an asthmatic. Sulphites can affect fewer than 1 in a million asthmatics, which is why the warning is on the label. However higher levels of sulfites are present in fruit juices, dried fruits; in fact there is a huge range of food products that contain sulphites including eggs.

It is more likely that the problem is histamines that are present in some wines.

However, Frey Vineyards sell organic wines that they say contains no detectable sulfites -- see http://www.freywine.com/freywine/wine-list.html

Good Evening,

It's not going to be easy, but Trader Joe's and Whole Foods Market are the two places that I know sell SOME sulfite free wines. Also, look into some of the new Frost Wines. I was told that since they stay on the vine longer, that they don't use the same amount of sulfites to process the wine...

Good Luck!

James

A truly organic wine should be sulfite free. Look for a certified organic wine.

Depends on where you are. Try Wegmans, Trader Joes, Total Wine & More. Also try wines that are not made of grapes, oddly enough. Rice wines, for instance, are often sulfite free.

Sulfites are a more common health problem than the above states. I personally know six people who are targets for the stuff. And it gives me stiffness in the back and neck. It can even cause hospitalization and unexpected death.
