Ann Rule. She's an excellent writer and gets the history of who she is writing about. The way she writes makes you feel you know who she's writing about.

Ann Rule is the best! She does outstanding research, It's very apparent that she spends months, sometimes years, before she starts to write. She has such empathy for victims and their friends and loved ones.
I own every book she has published! I admire many writers, but she is the one I'd most like to meet: just NOT while she's working on a story!.
I also really like Mark Fuhrman's work.

There are two contenders: Truman Capote, and Ann Rule.
Capote's "In Cold Blood" was one of the most chilling books I've ever read. It kept you in suspense the whole time, even though you knew at the very beginning how it was going to end. Rule isn't quite as good as Capote, but she does interesting research into the backgrounds of both the victims and the killers.

How can you beat Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood" for a great true crime story?
Harper Lee (author of "To Kill a Mockingbird") grew up next door to Capote in Alabama and helped him research the Kansas deaths, trial, and execution.
This book reads as a novel but presents the situation using trial transcript quotations.

Few can compare to Ann Rule's full length books. Her collections are less satisfying, but her regular books really give you insight into the minds and backgrounds of the killers and the victims.

I have to disagree with those who posted before me and say Max Allan Collins.
Between his own properties and licensed works (like the CSI novels) he always tries to make sure every detail is as realistic as possible.
