Badbilly is right about the number of years... But, the reason Lincoln used this in the Gettysburg Address was to make a reference to the origin of the United States.. The speech was made in 1863 and since he said "Four score and seven years ago" you need to subract 87 from 1863... When you do that you get 1776, the year that "our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation...."

Lincoln was talking about the years since the United States Declaration of Independence, 1776. His speech, the Gettysburg Address, was given in 1863. That was four score and seven years after 1776, in other words, 87 years after 1776.

When Lincoln made this address it was 87 years after 1776.

Score=20 years x 4= 80+7= 87
