America started out as a Puritanical country with a Puritan ethic. Sex was mostly regarded as a duty, biological function, like breathing, eating, urination / defecation. It wasn't talked about outside the home much. Any immodest displays of flesh were considered immoral. Even in Summer, people were usually clothed to the maximum. I think in America we are not as reluctant to discuss sex in public, we have become more open about it than our Puritan / Pilgrim ancestors were. Adult Sex shoppes are common sights, & of course there is Internet pornography.& videos, generally poor in quality, which leave little to the imagination. A look through the pages of almost ANY U.S. phone book will list strip clubs / exotic dance clubs, massage parlors & escort services, which may or may not offer sexual services on the side.
In some ways America is still rather " Puritanical " or Victorian in our attitudes & approach to sex, & in some ways we are somewhat more OPEN & Liberal than our ancestors, even those of the 40's & 50's. A form of cultural & moral
" schizophrenia ", perhaps..... There are some cultures in the Third & Developing world that have far more relaxed attitudes than the U.S. or Europe. Some tribal cultures where nudity is natural & sex doesn't have a stigma of shame about it & they are accpted even in this day & age.

You are trying to understand most of a Continent dude. You really didn't think we all think the same way did you?
The problem with Janet is that it was aired at half time at a Superbowl. One does not exactly expect porn during those.
Do Americans have a sex hang up? You betcha. A bunch of them. Pigs in the muck as the book "Funco Files" put it.
We stay permanently titillated. There are pluses and minuses to that...

because the US government regulates so much that they instill fear in everyone. (They rule by fear, like the ancient romans). Of course they would, they are mostly roman catholics anyway.
I think if most Amercians had the ability to have sex without fear of prosecution (jail) they'd do it more. In America the legislature is run by a bunch of alcoholic old farts that probably can't get it up anyway, and out of jealousy try to prevent us from doing so. There are still a few states that allow marriag/sex below age 18, even below 16.
I think alot of the sexually transmitted diseases were man-made for the purpose of population control, and to instill fear of having sex, which would result in less people in the long run, too. Who did it? Who knows. Probably the catholic church and the governments. After all they kill jews and Jesus himself, so what's a few million pawns like us. They founded religion basically, so they have more control than most people realize.

Probably by the movies we export which always make the sex act into a lustful sin, into a wild escape, or hides it completely.
Like "Fight Club" was all about a bunch of guys homoerotically beating the crap out of each other, but when it came to the actual sex, it was always behind a door.
Also our most loved "curse" word is f u c k.
Which speaks volumes.
Whoever wrote about a history of puritanism and victorianism above is dead-on.

We don't show porn to children and we don't strip at the Super Bowl in front of a world wide audience including children.
If you find the posture hypocritical find me the European woman who chose to walk around naked at primary school. It doesn't happen.
Europeans may be more comfortable with their nudity but they not reached the point that exposing themselves to children is considered acceptable. It is still the exception and not the rule.

This has been a common misconception for a very long time. The fact of the matter is that sex in the US is not as open and talked about as it has been in parts of Europe. There is a negative attitude often given to those who are open about sex in the US, whereas in Europe it is more common not only to talk about, but to be more promiscuous with as well. We are not afraid, just not as open about it.

I truly don't know, consider that US is an all time leader in pornography industry. The revenues reach 14 BILLION per year[1]. With numbers like this how can say that Americans are afraid of sex?

i have a friend who used to work at a hotel. she said whenever a big christian convention took place in the hotel is when the porn pay-for-view profits were the highest. i think this might help explain your question--even if it is dealing with generalities. in such cases, people in america can be hypocritical about sex--pretending it's "dirty" and "sinful" to their families and friends, but yet they're secretly amongst the largest consumers supporting the so-called sex industry.

Honestly...
Because religion is so much a part of our culture, we can't get away from it. We're so worried about what "the Bible says" that we won't let ourselves live enjoyable lives. The religious right run the country. If you don't believe me, look at our born-again President and his views on homosexuals, abortion, stem cell research, and even global warming (who cares if the planet's heating up, the rapture is soon!).

I am noy afraid of my sexuality, or breastfeeding in public, I am an American woman and I pleasured myself in a roomful of people at a swinger club, and no one else was doing anything sexual or naked yet, the party had just started, your statement is a stereotypical assumption not all of us are puritanical imperialists and if most of us are it is from your continent from whence our founding forefathers and their defective thinking came from
