or do people make the same mistakes over and over again, fully knowing the consequences that are likely to occur if an action is taken.....do people's brains just stop functioning at these moments or do they like to take risks?

Yes. In fact learning from mistakes is the best (and some people say, the only) way to learn. And yes, some people make the same mistake over and over again and do not seem to learn or, as you remarked, seem to like taking risks thinking, well THIS time it'll work. If people make adjustments to their projects each time they make a mistake, then they are learning.

Smart people and intelligent animals learn from their mistakes as well as others mistakes. Normally it is difficult to accept our mistakes. Next is to find how to avoid it. Sometimes we need a mentor or a friend to find out what is it that we are doing wrong and probably help us find out a better way of doing the same thing. This is frequently found in sportsmen and actors.

Slaves of habit commit the same mistakes knowing fully the consequences. for example smokers, drug addicts, gamblers etc. Addiction is something physical as well as psychological.

We can definitely learn from others mistakes and most of the time we don't realize it. Children grow up observing elders and they either imitate or try to avoid the bad behaviour.

Maybe part of the problem is being able or willing to see our mistakes. I would be the first to say I repeat the same behaviors over and over when I have given the decision a lot of thought and feel this is the best choice. Only recently have I been able to reconsider a choice that has been hurtful to me. To do that I must feel "safe", often that safeness is found in my church service or in my private devotion when I give up everything to God.

I think this depends on your age. If you are below the age of 20 you don't learn from your mistakes as much as if you were older. When you get out on your own and have to support yourself then you are more aware of how life works and the consequences of your screw ups. When you're young you have mom and dad to pick up the pieces so we don't seem to learn as much!!

I learn from my mistakes but I guess that some people like to take risk and see how far they can go.

Well nobody is perfect including me. I try to learn from my mistakes and I do not always succeed.

There are people that make BIG mistakes and yes they will do it again and again. Like they are obsessed or something.

It is my experience that some people will be able to learn from the mistakes of others. Others will always have to do it the hard way.

A common statement about this is-the definition of "insane" is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

VERY DEFINITELY!
I'll likely never jump out the third floor window again.
Nor did I care for the taste of turpentine.
Putting chewing gum on my teacher's chair wasn't too bright -- I likely won't repeat that -- unless I forget.
There's lots more -- but I forgot what the lessons were.
