Hi, i am trying to build a custom pc, and i know that the motherboard should not touch the back metal panel. So if you don't have anything else to separate the two, can you just use duct tape and cover the back metal or could the tape melt? Any advice thanks.

there were not standoffs, with the case or the motherboard, and i hate to say, buy i have $0 to buy anything...

no it will short it out. you can use black electrical tape
dont cover any simms or chips, they will over heat

You should use correct stand-offs and screws (which should have come with the computer case) to securely install the motherboard in the computer's case. Note that, apart from the possibility of the motherboard over-heating and melting the tape (causing fire, death, and destruction), the sharp soldered pins under the motherboard may pierce the tape, touch the metal plate in the case and short-circuit, killing the motherboard and possibly starting a fire (causing death and destruction again).

Note that apart from the standoffs making sure that air flows around the motherboard and that it doesn't short-circuit, they raise the motherboard to a height that will allow you to install peripheral cards onto the motherboard and securely screw them onto the case. You really need to buy or find (maybe on a computer case that has been thrown away) some motherboard standoffs.

No, duct tape is not a good insulator. The heat inside the case will cause the duct tape to dry out and crack fairly quickly. Please ignore the jokers that say that you can. They're either trying to be funny, or they're clueless!

The motherboard (and probably the case) will come with standoffs that attach to the mounting plate in the computer case. You either snap or screw the motherboard to these standoffs. This is the ONLY way to install a motherboard.

Do not use duct tape on any equipmet like that!
Your tape could cause several problems.
-melt
-mess with airflow or vents
-duct tape also has its own magnetic field which could possible mess with things
-and there may be other problems

If you are building your own pc and the motherboard comes that close to the panel, then you must be doing something wrong or you need a new case. Try following a guide, such as:

Doubtful that you have any circuits near that edge of the motherboard, so electrical insulation shouldn't be an issue. Physical shock/striking/rubbing is. Duct tape would act as a cushion, but it would wear over time. Try a medium hard rubber cushion or a silicon bead instead.

Hmm, I don't know, but I don't think using duct tape is a good idea. The CPU gives off descent amount of heat, so it could melt, resulting damages to your motherboard.

You can also just ground the metal in the case and ground yourself. I would only use duct tape to put something like cardboard up against the back.

Do not use duct tape. Two sets of screws should have come with the motherboard or the case. Each motherboard has custom holes to keep it in place. Line up the motherboard with the screw holes in the case to know which screws to screw in. Once they're screwed in, place the motherboard on top and screw in the next set of screws to keep it secure.

Just go to www.outpost.com and order the screws that separate the motherboard.
I wouldn't use Duct tape, because it will not allow for air flow.

I would advice against it. Usually motherboards have special screws to attach to the back panel without touching it.
