My husband's lip and face around his nose are swollen and sore. That didn't happen until a few days after his accident, and the swelling on his nose had already gone down.

i beleive you can and also if left untreated it can cause breathing problems later on in life. best to get it seen to asap.

Anytime you get a break on the skin there is always a potential for infection to set in. In your husband's case, please get him to seek medical care right away as in NOW. The nasal area is a very dangerous area to get any sort of infection as blood from this area drains through the sinuses (large blood vessels)of the brain and may give rise to cavernous sinus thrombosis. (A very bad thing) DO NOT DELAY

did he get x-rays and it is possible to get infestion in the area alot were the nose got broken and did it break the skin?
