Is there a word for losing or forgetting words? A friend told me it's called anaphasia, but that's not in the dictionary. I've looked for other spellings, but to no avail. The closest word I can find to "anaphasia" is "anaphase", which is "the stage in mitosis or meiosis following metaphase in which the daughter chromosomes move away from each other to opposite ends of the cell." If you know, please help me. I've been forgetting words lately, and it's driving me nuts. It'd be nice to know if there's a term for this. Thanks!

As the other answers have noted, you are probably referring to the word “aphasia”. Aphasia is not forgetting words however; it is a general term for the inability to speak. ANOMIA is closer to what you are looking for. With ANOMIA, the subject has difficulty remembering or recognizing names, which the subject should know well.
That isn't "forgetting" the words however, it is usually caused by some sort of brain damage. Alzheimer’s disease often makes people forget words too.

I'm not sure if anaphasia is correct, it may well be, but it, like the term you're looking for is a very specialised medical term. Try looking in a medical dictionary, you'll probably find them all listed pretty much alphabetically starting at ana.....

Actually, aphasia is a structural neurological disease. The actual condition of being unable to remember a word (having it "on the tip of your tongue") is called lethologica.

I suspect the learned responders who have answered this question are absolutely correct. On the other hand, we slightly more elderly citizens simply refer to it by the initials C.R.S.
Politely termed "having a senior moment", it refers to "Can't Remember Sh**".

"One forgets words as one forgets names. One's vocabulary needs constant fertilizing or it will die."
As previously noted, Aphasia is the word you are seeking.
