I'm looking for an animal for a coat-of-arms/seal I'm trying to make, it must symbolize the qualities of justice, fairness, liberty and equality. I want an animal that can be used as a powerful symbol for justice and redeption, liberty and ethics (ie "doing what's right").
If the animal belongs to or represents the African continent as well, the better.

What animals could embody these qualities and look good on a coat of arms? Lions and eagles are aweasome, but they are so cliche! Can you help me out with some ideas?

try a lamb, or a ram, or a tiger or a raccoon

Try the porcupine. They live all over Africa.

Justice - They only get ya if you jack with 'em. Predators have been found dead with a porcupine lodged in their throat.

Liberty - I'd say they can do just about ANYTHING they want - within reason.

Fairness - They don't attack, they only defend.

Equality - Their strong defense puts them on pretty equal footing with most animals.

Not quite as cool as a lion, eagle, snake, or tiger but if you're looking for something different...

How about an Okapi? They are beautiful. Strong. They look like a cross between a giraffe, a zebra, and a gazelle.

Elephants have long been known for their strong family bonds.

Then there are the hippos...underappreciated...they also have strong family bonds and are known as the king of the river. Many wild animals know better than to tangle with a protective hippo.

Those are my 3 African picks.....Australia: the wombat

And then there's my favorite animal of all: the Mighty Moose.

The regal African elephant. They are the largest animal on the continent, and fearless; they would be the ones to pass true judgement, for they have their own niche in the ecosystem that no other can or would usurp; their fairness would follow suit, for they would not attempt to take over another's range; they represent liberty by their simple being - try and make them do something!
And they show their equality in that, despite their ferocity and size and temperament, they can be routed by the smallest of us all: a fieldmouse. Maybe the mouse is tougher than we credit it.

A porcupine preserves it's own lliberty and makes it's own justice by being unapproachable. It doesn't need to interact with other species, but it is a free spirit. Free and easy enough to eat all the belts and hoses out of your truck if you don't watch out.
Or maybe the three toed sloth. It captures the stationary internet spirit perfectly. I would say the couch potato, but that's not an animal. It's a tuber.

Fairness, justice and equality in Yahoo Answers? Don't get me started!! Of course there's not! We all have stories about their stupid and unfair policies. For example, there was a pervert who had posted about necrophilia AND child molestation in one question. I reported the question, nothing happened. I then asked two (2) questions on different categories about why Yahoo would permit such a question to remain and, yes, I provided a link so people could see the pervert's question. One of MY questions got removed (for asking the same question twice) IMMEDIAGELY and well before the pedophile's answer got removed. This new "community moderation" is just the Ayatollah Yamster's way of calling for a new jihad against us users! The trolls have a field day and us "normal" people get screwed. It sucks. Welcome to YaHELL!

The Lion. 'Equality', because it just wants to prove that it is your equal. Fairness, because it believes in population control. Liberty, because you don't take liberties with it. Justice, because it is judge, jury and executioner, the punishment always being the same, 'death', with no right of appeal. No final meal either, because it's you.

The oyster. Rock hard on the outside, soft a jelly on the inside and occasionally holding a treasure that it does not value.

That was my answer. My wife's was, "A beagle".

A shark. Or some other kind of powerful sea creature, maybe a turtle becuase they're elegant. The point is, there's more than just creatures of land and sky.

I agree with the elephant suggestion. Predators are hardly the representatives of justice and fairness ... unless you consider that death is the great equaliser.

The bonobo monkey. They are compassionate and seem to show a higher form of problem resolution/compassion/ethics than almost all other living creatures.
