First of all when you pick a puppy it can't be because of the cat. You have to pick one that will be happy in your surroundings, like how big is your yard? Do they get along with kids and people? Do I have time to care of the dog? However to answer the question about the cat, I have a yellow lab and I had the cat first. They don't get along well, and it's been 9 years. It all depends on the cat and how they adapt to the dog. Cats rule the roost and the questions is does the cat want a dog around? So you will not no until you bring the Puppy home. However I heard Pitbulls and Weimheimers are not good around cats. Stick to a Lab or a Gold Retriever. They are all around good dogs.

that depends more on the dog and the cat more so that the breed. there are friendly dogs and friendly cats and some that have a temper. the best way to ensure you have an animal that wont act up is to get one that is used to being with people and has some information comming with it. My advice is to get an animal that needs adoption. I really like petfinder.com you can search for animals in your area that really need a home. They also have informaion on the animals as to their temprement and if they can be around cats, small children, other dogs, etc. really good site.

you need to know that all puppyd bite!!not to be mean, they teeth and they chew on stuff.if you get one young enough they can be trained to be around cats and even like the cats!!!we have a pitbull puppy who loves our cats, even thinks shes a cat,the youngest cat actually sleeps near her at night!!!our previous pitbull also liked to play with the cats and never once hurt one!!!

try puppys for dummys, its a great book and will give you lots of tips on finding and trainging a puppy no matter what you get!!! and may i suggest getting a rescue dog, instead of going to a breeder!!!!

Pick one appropriate for your surroundings and preferences. Besides that, any will do, if you raise the puppy beside the cat and teach them to be friends, then you will not have a problem.

Heck, get a pug! They're good with anything or anyone. They'll always be the happiest dog on earth. Just be sure to provide those puppy teeth lots of pig ears, or the little beast will drive you nuts.

Pick the one that is not timid, the one that is scared of sounds and movement is going to be a bad puppy, the one that is running around not afraid of noise or movement is going to be the better puppy.

If you are getting a puppy you don't have to worry about him hurting your cat. They will learn to get along.

A full grown dog would be a bigger problem.
