The active ingredient in Sevin is carbaryl. Sevin is the trade name for the product whereas carbaryl is the chemical name of the ingredient that does the dirty work. Sevin is also used as a flea/ant killer, but under a different name, like First Choice or another name. A really good example is imidacloprid. Imidacloprid kills fleas, ticks, grubs, mole crickets, Japanese beetles, etc. If you have dogs and cats, you know it as Advantage. It is also under the trade names of Premise, Merit, Admire and Marathon. All of these products contain imidaclporid.
The main difference between Advantage, and say, Merit, is the % active ingredient in the product. The amount of imidacloprid in Advantage is a great deal smaller than what is in Merit. This is so pets are kept safe. This is probably way too much information, but sometimes I get carried away.
As far as killing the ants, you should find out what kind they are. Some ants are attracted to sugar, while others are not. Usually an ant bait will work. You can pick these up at a local home improvement store. All you have to do is sprinkle it around the perimeter of your home, and they will pick it up. Also try to find out what they're doing or where they're going. If you remove what it is that is attracting them, they shouldn't be a problem anymore!

As a tanker truck driver I hauled Seven pesticide made by Union Carbide. It carries a strong warning that it is deadly to honeybees. I hauled it to the western states for gypsy moth infestation. Don't know about ants. I would think any Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes or Kmart would carry a cheap pesticide for ants. I read once that some kind of common powder was good to get rid of ants. I forgot what powder. Maybe someone else here knows.

Sevendust is a heavy, melodic/metal band from Atlanta, Georgia. They formed in late 1994 under the name "Crawlspace" but later were forced to change their name when a group from the West Coast claimed rights to it. They struggled to find a new title but finally settled on Sevendust after bassist Vinnie Hornsby was looking through his grandmother's garage and found a can of plant pesticide called "Sevin dust." Vocalist Lajon Witherspoon's take on the name is that seven is a holy number and we are all made of dust. Their name has also been associated with the computer virus with the same name. They were originally signed to TVT Records, but now have released their first album with Winedark Records (through Universal Music).
Good Luck.

Sevendust has same component with the Seven pesticides use by gardener to kill plant bugs and other diseases its a broad spectrum insecticides.
The one that your mother in law gave you to use was indeed a flea/tick killer use for cats and dogs.
Check this site out and maybe from there you could browse more information...http://www.idsexim.com/192-Seven-Dust-Insecticide.html

Sevin Dust can be used to kill ants and many other insects. Pour 2-4 ozs around the mound, disturb the mound repeat, or sprinkle over the ground were you dont want the ants
