No one really knows what they are anymore. Who would favor the following?:
-balanced budgets
-smaller government
-Increased spending on military
-reducing spending on some social programs
-gradually introducing tax cuts
Most would guess conservatives. Wrong. This is part of the platform of the Liberal Party of Canada.
How about these?:
-free state-provided healthcare
-free college education for the top 25% of high school graduates
-tax-incentives for alternative energy usage
-raising user-fees and licencing fees
Liberal? Guess again. Conservative Governor of Massachusetts.
The only people who stay on the fringes are those who can make money off of it. Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, Michael Moore, and Al Franken are all out to make a buck by promoting an agenda that, while appealing to a few, is not in the best interests of any.
I'll be happy when society catches up to my underwear. It's "label-free"...

They are just labels and stereotypes. The basic principle of conservatism was supposed to be the less government the better, but an alleged conservative, Bush, has expanded the government way beyond anything imaginable. Conservatives were also supposed to be people of civility, temperance, and human values, yet they are now extremely rude, intemperate in remarks, and prefer abstract values (like patriotism) to human ones (like kindness, compassion, and so on).
Liberalism, on the other hand, started out as the philosophy of liberty and individual responsibility (all the founders were liberals). The only real liberals these days are the Libertarians. The Republicons have become the party of the big state. And I don't know what the liberals are who all the conservatives criticize. Democrats are just as big government as the other people.
So why bother with all these labels? It's easier than thinking. It's easier to hate a label than real people.

What's up MadSky, been a while and thought I would chime in. I would say to a degree, it depends. You're right, neither group sticks with the classic ideology of their group (generally speaking), but what options do we have? I would just take these "labels" with a grain of salt and work for change via the ballot box or mobilizing in your area, if one has the time that is. Labels can be "messy" especially in a public forum like this :(.

the position have you ever been Bro? I ignored your sanity! Liberals help civil liberties yet no longer the 2d modification. They help civic participation to benefit all (exceptionally the detrimental) yet church homes make up the biggest funders and furnish the most volunteers to such classes. they say they help training yet are lenient on crime (ever attempt to assist a baby learn contained in the initiatives?). Then they help tax breaks yet on condition that the detrimental and the wealthy do not get any (me me me me) Cons help a small authorities out of the lives of civilians yet help bans on marriage. They help authorities administration of morality. Bush has spent better on increasing the authorities.. does he even understand what a veto is? both activities are a wash in corruption and pandering for votes. no one is guidance the deliver.

I quote one of my favorite shows of all time:
"We all need some therapy, because somebody came along and said "liberal" means soft on crime, soft on drugs, soft on Communism, soft on defense, and we're gonna tax you back to the Stone Age because people shouldn't have to go to work if they don't want to. And instead of saying "Well, excuse me, you right-wing, reactionary, xenophobic, homophobic, anti-eductaion, anti-choice, pro-gun, Leave it to Beaver trip back to the fifties", we cowered in the corner and said "Please, don't hurt me." No more. I really don't care who's right, who's wrong. We're both right. We're both wrong. Let's have two parties, huh? What do you say?"
