I was diagnosed with a learning disability when I was a child, and for the most part, you could never tell today. However, my fine motor skills are seriously impaired (like I am 22 and still sometimes have problems buttoning my pants and cutting meat). How do I get occupational therapy...I think it would benefit me. I am in my last year of college and need to gain some fine motor skills to live on my own and to perform my job adequetly (I will be a Special Education teacher in May). Like I said, all my other areas are fine. Do I need a refferral from my doctor, or will neuropsychologist do? Thanks.

Check with your insurance co to see if it is covered. Or just locate a Physical Therapist, they usually have an OT that works with them.

as long as he's a doctor, and s/he's your healthcare expert, that healthcare expert can refer you. i'm not sure with reference to the neuropsychologist. That sounds love that's commencing up to get right into a different form of healthcare expert. they often won't settle for a psychologist of any sort.

here in Australia if you want to see a OT you can simply phone them and discuss it. Most will be happy to set you straight on what to do and how to go about it.

go through your medical insurance provider...your doctor can write a prescription for you to receive the therapy, and the prescription insurance can cover it.

Go to your primary physician. Tell him/her of your concerns and they will write a referral or convince you you don't need it. But if you seriously need it that shouldn't be any hesitation.
