Cold Sassy Tree
Beloved
The Bluest Eye
The Old Man and the Sea
The Pearl
Of Mice and Men
The House on Mango Street
Romiett and Julio
The series 'A Series of Unfortunate Events'
Pictures of Hollis Woods

*** I realize you asked for new ones, and I included some, but some of the classics are just that for a reason! They are worth going over and your students will be the better for reading them.

The girls still go for the traditional series books. American Girls, Dear America, Twitches, Saddle Club, etc are still being read by many. I have seen some of the more 'advanced' young ladies reading the Dark Hunter books, but those are definitely R rated.

Since it's much easier for people to be exposed to what's currently popular, and most people don't go out looking for the classics - unless recommended to them - don't you think it might be a wise decision to stick with some form of classical literature?

But, then again, who said that Harry Potter isn't without it's merits....

I would recommend reading the Kite Runner. I believe it will make the students view the world very different from there own. Plus they will also learn about some factual information. You might want to check it out yourself.

Harry Potter books are da bomb!!! I just graduated and half my class was all reading Harry Potter. It's a way to get them to read a long book, that they'll enjoy.
