It is a misconception that you should get an agent in order to start getting acting work.

Remember that an agent only gets paid when you do, so they don't want to sign people who aren't working yet. They want to sign people who are getting acting jobs and will make them money.

If you are serious about starting an acting career, the first thing you need to do is start building your resume by participating in as many different acting experiences as possible. While you are doing this, start exploring your options for getting some training from a well respected organization. No one will take you seriously if you do not have experience or training.

It depends on how much in demand your "type" is right now. It's difficult to get work without an agent and an agent typically won't sign you unless they think they can get you work. Interview a couple of agents who specialize in younger actors, they can give you current, accurate information on the marketplace. Also the note about starting with commercials - maybe even harder to self-submit for commercials than for theatrical.

I'd recommend a little bit of study first. It makes a world of difference. Not only do agents entirely prefer a little bit of studywritten on your CV, but the things you'll learn will help your confidence. Try to find somewhere to learn in a group, and if you can go to a diploma course or something similar. Good luck!

You need to take acting classes, for three or four years, before you get an agent.

I don't think that you probably would right away. Instead you should start with some commercials or something.
