MASTER GARDENER TO THE RESCUE.

The minute you hit town.... ah, well better use the john first. I'm sure it was a long drive? The second thing you do is pick up the phone & call 411 for the phone number of the County Farm Advisor on Overland Ave. Call & ask for the MASTER GARDENER office. Ask all the questions about veggies or any thing else garden related.
Everything you need to know for the price of a phone call.

I agree with another poster that a local nursery would love to help you with this information. Also, Sunset magazine is a great resource for what plants and vegetables are best to plant during every month of the year in the Western region.
As to why - San Diego does not have a 4-season cycle, so some plants that need frost won't do well here. Also, it gets very hot in some regions of the county, so some plants wouldn't grow there as opposed to closer to the coast.
Good luck!

Guess it is about like where I live in South Texas. I plant most everything twice a year. However, cole crops like cabbage, broccole, cauliflower are strictly winter crops for me. It gets too hot in the summer. Other things such as tomatoes, corn, beans, peppers, etc. we plant in the spring and fall. Peas are a plant in early January. This last year we never had a frost so we picked our fall tomatoes until the plants just died of old age around the first of march. Best advice is just to try what ever you want to. I am sure that everyone in San Deigo will tell you that you can and can't but most of the great advisers never get around to planting anything. Folks used to tell me that I could not grown corn in the fall. Now all the neighbors come by to sponge a few ears for Thanksgiving.

The BEST thing to do is go to a Plant Nursery there and question them. They would love to tell you. Sorry i'm not more original. Also, you may want to visit a site like San Diego's official website and ask them, I'm sure they would be happy to connect you to a garden website that's local there.

Vegetable gardens have a tendency to diminish resources values. plant existence have a tendency to enhance the cultured of a resources and enhance its value. in my opinion I choose a vegetable backyard, yet people seem to imagine that operating the land motives it to down in value.
