wow... that's a lot of questions you got there! =)
i've lived in m'sia for two years. however, i was only a child. but i can tell you this, m'sia is a good & stable country to live in. the economy is always under status quo. the laws are fixed (and strict!). i'd have to say that the government is pretty uptight and will not loosen up, if you know what i mean. um... about drinking tapwater. lemme put it this way... tapwater in m'sia is not as clean as tapwater in s'pore. okay? and the tourist attractions... i think there's plenty but i'm not familiar with all of them. the most famous tourist attractions are the petronas towers, the annual formula one race, and perhaps penang for its beaches. there's also plenty of shopping malls: jusco, KLCC, sunway lagoon, lot 10, and so on. the most expensive area in KL is bintang walk. all of the exclusive shops & hotels are there. hawker centres are everywhere. there's no problem in finding them. oh ya, public transportation is available too. this also includes internet access. i was in KL during 1996 to 1998. i don't know about the visas but if you wish to do PR (permanent residence), you have to stay put in m'sia for 5 years. i had a house there before in sri hartamas. the only bad things i can say about m'sia is that: they have an annoying accent, not-so-good (local) music, strict & rigid laws, and the mentality of some malays are unbearable to cope with.
now, indonesia. i've been here for nine years. i live in an area called lebak bulus. this is in south jakarta. the tapwater here... DO NOT DRINK. it's not that clean. if you want clean water, it's advisable to drink mineral water only. the best tourist attractions would be outside the capital city. so, go visit places like yogyakarta, solo, BALI (it's in capital letters because it's recommended to go there), padang, banjarmasin, and so on. you will love the culture in indonesia because it is so diversed. i guarantee you'll like it. the best shopping malls are in JKT: plaza indonesia, plaza senayan, PIM I & PIM II (pondok indah mall), cilandak town square, plaza semanggi, sudirman place, and so on. hawker food... they'll walk to your house as opposed to malaysian hawker stands. malaysian hawkers only stays put in one area whereas indonesian hawkers can travel around. public transportion... hehe. you might enjoy it for experience and you might not because it's... not nice. bajajs, metro minis, angkots, ojeks, busway... those are the types of public transports you'll find here. our trains here suck. trains... or MRTs are better in m'sia. we don't have MRTs yet. and yea, we do have internet access here. but not everybody has it. what you need to know about indonesia is that the laws & regulations are very flexible. you can bend the law and get away with it. so, what i'm trying to say is, you simply can't trust any indonesian you meet. take my word for it! also, the immigration here is loose. they can cheat you if you're non-indonesian. they make it very difficult for foreigners to come in and out of indonesia. why? "money, money, mooneey..." beware. that's all i can say.
public toilets... everywhere in the world it's not going to be the cleanest place. hehe.
i cannot say much about hotels in m'sia because i've never in my whole stayed in a hotel in KL. i've either lived in a house my family rented or... i stay with relatives. in indonesia, however, there's a lot of hotels: hotel borobudur, hilton, panorama (cheap), hotel kemang, mandarin, grand flora, mahakam, kristal, and so on. it just varies in price.
hopefully this will help.

i have studied for 4 years in KL, msia and it was generally a pleasant experience.
NEVER drink water from the tap straight..always boil to make sure. when you buy mineral water make sure it still has a seal on it and is unopened.
there are lots of tourist attractions in and around KL and i'd personally recommend the batu caves. there are lots of hotels to suit all budgets. shopping is plentiful especially around the bukit bintang area.
i lived in a rented property in bangsar which is where quite a few expatriates live. friendly and helpful neighbours around.
buses are frequently behind schedule. taxi drivers have a tendency to rip off foreigners but try striking a conversation and you should be fine.
public toilets in the malls are generally fine. there is usually a small fee (20c) to use these toilets. internet (broadband) is reasonably priced (about RM100) and the main provider is tmnet.
hope this helps.

Try buying the Lonely Planet. If you want to work there, ask to talk to an employee of a company. I'm not sure anyone can answer questions about all of that for two huge countries. Imagine asking a question like that about the US or whereever you are from to get an idea about how huge the question is. Good luck though. I've sepnt time in both countries and they are great places to visit or live!

my passport is still showing that i'm indonesian.
so.. here goes..
good exp: cheap for everything, everywhere..., friendly faces, friendly relax atmosphere..except if you're in jakarta central business district
bad exp : pickpocket
clean water to drink, buy a bottle of bottled drink water.. the reliable brand is Aqua, less than 50cents.
public toilets are not as much as ones i in your country, but in the tourist attractions you'd find plentiful.
internet access is everywhere, starbucks in jakarta are wi-fi free.
believe me indonesia is not as primitive as you think it is. it's so cosmopolitan.
public transport -> use taxi (blue bird and express taxi are good ones), or use transjakarta bus (make sure you have a jakarta street map while you're on it).
we have grand hyatt hotels, hiltons, 5 star, 4 star, bed and breakfast, you name it.
we have carrefour (think French version of Wal-Mart)
enjoy..
