is it possible to become a nursery teacher with no qualifications? i'd love to do it but fear i would already need to have a degree under my belt. i'm 27 and have just an unimpressive gnvq in an unrelated subject to my name!!! is there a glimmer of hope?

There's probably hope, but you have to have a resume that will backup that you have, or can, work with young children and be responsible for them. It would be easier with qualifications, so I'd suggest working at a daycare or as a substitute teacher at an elementary school, or maybe even a nursery teacher's aid for a while to build up your resume.

Good luck!

The answer is NO, especially since the passage of the No Child Left Behind Act. Those qualifications vary from state to state, but you do need something.

For example, where I live, I am able to and do teach on the college level, but in order for me to teach public school, I need to go back to school for additional training.

For most states, the qualifications involves simply having a certain number of ECE (early childhood education) credits under your belt. How many credits? Generally between 9 and 15.

You could apply to be a teaching assistant which is in effect an unqualified teacher.

You would have to take first aid courses, but most of the time these type of courses are offered through the school.

Being a teaching assistant also gives YOU he opportunity to see if this is just a fantasy that you want to teach and see is the reality is actually a bloody nightmare!

Apply - what do you have to loose?

yes you can
i had no quilifications and i went to the local collage and enrolled in diploma in child care and education course, they do a certificate in child care and education as well

when you enrol you will do a short exam to find out what level you will be suited to have a look at the link in may help you decide

the diploma is for 2 years and the certificate is for 1 year

dont worry about your age when i did my course there where quite a few mature people who were there to one of then was 51 so dont be frightend,

i think you have guts to want to better yourself

good luck

without teaching & experience no! but you can do nvq courses in 2/3 yrs & you can be teaching assistants, playgroup/school leaders. but to teach you'll need nore qualifications, alot of experience police check etc, personality won't get you that job but experience will! it is do-able good luck!
P.S i trained while working in a primary school, had to be employed by school & i trained through ELWA.

yeah, just need to get to know the right people, don't think you actually need any qualifications. My mum became a nursery teacher at 45 with just two O-Levels to her name.

So just go for it
