Use an oil base paint, such as the ones used to paint canvas. It comes in a tube, you can get it at most art supply stores. Get either brown, or black. Pour your stain in a medium sized container, ans in small amounts mix in the oil paint, until you reach the color you want. This works as long as you are useing an oil based stain.

You can test using stain like golden oak 1st then dk walnut. I know that if you use golden oak then cherry the color is a richer color. Test a piece of wood that is the same type of wood that your project is to see what colors work.

There are black stains that you could mix with your stain or use alone., A second coat of stain can also darken the wood but wait an hour between coats. Also a tinted finish will add aditional shading and is likly what you need.
