The Polynesians were able to get from island to island on rafts and/or canoes. Thor Heyerdahl proved this in 1947 when he made a raft of balsa logs on the coast of South America and floated across the Pacific to Tuamoutu Islands, some 4,300 miles away. This goes a long way towards explaining the vaguely unified culture - or at least striking cultural similarities - of Pacific Islanders separated by thousands of miles of ocean.

It is thought that the Pacific islands have been inhabited for between 1000-1500 years, but no earlier than this. This makes Polynesian civilization comfortably pre-Columbian, but by no means ancient.

The Hawaiian Islands were first discovered by Europeans by James Cook (who called them the Sandwich Islands) in 1778. The islands were inhabited when he arrived.
