Then when you point out that they are sterotypical, they never really admit that they are. Example: My brother was wearing his pants saggy, and my grandma said that was thuggish and gangsta. Wasn't that sterotypical? But it's not only my grandma, everyone does it. But why?

People like to be able to identify themselves and what they see with what's familiar, but when an individual is grouped with others, she tends to take offense because of how she wants to stand out and declare her own personality and niche in the world. We all want to feel secure, but when we are recognized as being part of something else, the first instinct is to question our security in wondering how someone else can know who or what we are.

We live in a world where everyone has an opinion. No matter what era someone grows in there is always going to be people that don't like something youre wareing, listening to, driving, saying, what youre hair style is, what color you are, how you talk or how you act. And as parents we do the same thing to our kids. Its an endless cycle that we all go through and will continue to go through for years to come. Be the way you feel the best about yourself and dont try to be something you' re not. Thats one reason why people are sterotypical.

It's because everyone says something, and so everyone else believes them. Like if your parents say (I made this up) napkins can make you sick, you might believe them especially if you were little. People...just believe what other people say, especially for people they trust or when alot of people say that "napkins can make you sick".

And people probably don't admit they are because they really don't know they are sometimes. I mean, if you heard tons of people saying, "napkins can make you sick" and you say that to other people, you might not admit you're being sterortypical because you believe it. Or maybe because you just want to be right.

They probably also believe that some sterortypes are real because they actually experienced it, or saw it. Maybe not all the time, but most of the time. Or mabye they DID experience it all the time so they don't admit they're being steortypical.

I mean, I see alot of boys with baggy pants and they always act all "gangsta" like (not always, just exagerrating). But then yesterday I just found out that I was wrong. And before too.

Unfortunately some stereotypes apply. By the way Grandma has a point , tell your brother to dress better .

Its too bad I know but if it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck ,people assume its a duck. Honey its been that way forever .People were bad and going to hell if they listened to rock and roll,or wore their hair long . Today those same people are now running our country. Hmm maybe that wasn't the best choice lol. Tell your brother to prove his grandmother wrong by doing whats right to make something our of his self and show her people that follow that style are not all thugs. ( I don't think they are, its just a way of being an individual, by all looking just like their peers)

People feel as if they have some type of duty to point every body's faults out, but who are we to judge each other ? People are trying to put each other in categories to fit society's way of life, it is wrong, b/c everyone has a reason for the things they do,each person is their own category and stereotype. I feel you on this problem.

it's stereotypical to assume people (everyone, as you put it) are stereotypical... we are programmed by our family and our surroundings to have an idea in our heads of correct and incorrect behavior... Therefore, when we see things outside of our predetermined "norm" we tend to associate the behaviors and what we see of others with the last things we saw that had to do with that behavior. We all have stereotypical behaviors and without them we would not be trying to steer our kids and loved ones one way or the other. I believe these behaviors are healthy to a degree, it's hypocritical stereotypical behaviors that are quite annoying.

Because thugs wear their pants saggy. If the stereotype bothers your brother, perhaps he should dress better.

that's stereotyping....What an odd word ... gotta look it up

People look on the outside and judge; it is certainly easier than trying to really understand others...
criticism is a tragic way of expressing ones needs;obviously it has little (or no) positive effect on anyone...
to learn how to communicate effectively , see www.cnvc.org
this site also explains WHY people comm. this way even tho it is so useless...
