Why is it a big deal when black people try to look white, but not when white people try to go dark or black?

...like why is it such big deal that some black ppl bleach their skin to make it lighter, and people make fun of them...like they do to Michael Jackson..

...and nobody has anything to say about white people who are desperate for a tan...most of them turning lobster red and hideous...

(I'm talking about LOOKING black/white, not BEHAVING black/white)

DOUBLE STANDARD I SUPPOSE.
JUST LIKE FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS BLACKS HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THEIR FEATURES ARE UGLY.
NOSE,COLOR,A$$,EYES,ETC.....

BUT NOW THOSE FEATURES ARE ONLY ATTRACTIVE ON A PERSON IF THAT PERSON IS WHITE OR OF ANOTHER RACE(ANGELINA JOLIE,JLO,ETC.....)

THATS THE WAY HOLLYWOOD AND SOCIETY IS.


GOD FORBID IF YOU ARE BLACK AND STAIGHTEN YOUR HAIR OR BLEACH YOUR SKIN.
BUT I GUESS ITS CUTE FOR A WHITE WOMEN TO WEAR CORNROWS.
EVERYONE AND(HOLLYWOOD)ACTS LIKE A WHITE WOMEN IN BRAIDS IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL THING IN THE WORLD.
NOBODY TALKS ABOUT:HALLE BERRYS LIPS,JANET JACKSONS A$$,OPRAH WINFREYS LIPS,AND DAMN NEAR ALL OF THE BLACK ACTRESSES AND SINGERS FEATURES.
NO THOSE ARE UNATTRACTIVE.
BECAUSE THEY ARE ON BLACK PEOPLE.

SOCIETY AND HOLLYWOOD(WHICH CONTROLS SOCIETY) IS ALL SCREWED UP.

well...just so you know...you can't exactly "bleach" you skin white...that's too much. You can lighten your skin..but not with Bleach. Michael Jackson supposedly has a skin condition that took out the pigment in his skin.

Now, to answer your question, it's a big deal because it's a lot easier to go from no pigment to lots than the other way around. And white people tanning is something that happens all the time versus black people "bleaching" their skin. The only black people that I know that look like they have "bleached" their skin are albino people who don't have any melanin at all..

I used to tan when I was younger only because at the time, I thought it looked healthier to have some color.( I am so white I glow in the dark. ) I would love to have some color to my skin but as ive gotten older I have to worry about sun exposure. I never did this to try to look like another race at all. I just thought I looked better with a warmer tone. Maybe people make a deal of it because on is a surgical procedure and one is just enjoying the sun? If someone of darker skin wanted to stay lighter by avoiding the sun, I wouldn't think anything wrong with that, which in essence, is the opposite of what I was doing. Interesting question.

Because colour should only matter to a racists. What is the point of being something your not. That's like throwing away pride. Joy and history of all the people that fought for our freedom including whites who fought.Thats what is wrong with this world now. People have to change their skin colour to feel they fit in. Like even in my school omg sherwood hs is a mess. Most blacks will either hang with only blacks or just whites. Same as some whites and spanish people. Kids should not even be able to think difference of a skin colour is important. There are light skin people who say I hate dark skins. Even if your light skin your still lack smh. But yeH its crazy now

I notice that Michael Jackson is the only one you named, and he is who I was thinking of as well. You really can't name that many black people like that, can you? As far as white people tanning, most of them aren't trying to look black; they're just trying to get brown skin, which is more appealing to some of them than the white pale skin.

Actually, 'I' think it's dumber that white people try to act black. But on the other hand, when a black person acts more intelligent I don't consider them 'acting white'; I consider it to be of intelligence. I admire strong and wise older black men. They seem to have so much wisdom, sometimes.

Actually Michael Jackson has a disease that turned him white, But all that plastic surgery is caused from a problem he has with his own self, Oprah actually had mention him as an example when they were talking about people who are continuing to say they are ugly to the point were they want a nose job , wrinkles lifted, or cheek bones lifted

i beg to differ. personally, i make fun of those who make themselves all orange too. As for blacks looking white, the only example i can think of is michael jackson, and he's not a very good example. He's pretty warped anyway. Even if he was still black, people would be making fun of him. The whiteness is just extra ammo.

I get your point, but it is popular to have a tan nowadays. It is not so much that people are trying to change their ethnicity, more that they are trying to look a little more tan.

I don't know, but it seems like a double standard. Black ppl used to get made fun of because of our big lips, big butts and sometimes our dark complexions. Now a lot of non-black ppl get lip injections, want bigger booties and tan a lot. I guess it's like some of us have switched places.
What trips me out is the people who think Sally Sue is so hot with her lips, butt and dark tan when Shaniqua had all that the whole time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

both races have people who are not SATISFIED with their own self-image; whites want to tan to be darker, and blacks bleaching their skin......it's called insecurity about their own selves.
as far as michael jackson goes, he was great child singer - who unfortunately turned into a freak later in life... he is not a representative for black people.. he is A recluse - like Howard Hughes(the white guy)... he's a freak- and they come in ALL COLORS
