Leave your surge protector alone, until you see lightning out the window, then unplug it. Done that way, your equipment, and even your surge protector, will last many years. You'll also need to unplug it when going out of town, though.

Turning off the surge protector will disconnect the equipment you want to protect from the power system, so there is no need for protection.
i.e. if the surge protector is "off" you will not get any surges. If the surge protector is "on" surges will be clipped.
You are actually better protected with the surge protector "off", but then nothing works either.

No. Presumably, when you've turned off the surge protectors on/off switch, you've interrupted the circuit path by switching out the supply-side (hot wire). You therefore won't get a surge. Spikes shouldn't occur on the ground wire. If the power switch is a good double-pole, single throw, you've also taken the neutral line out of circuit, isolating that too. Now, if you've still got a network cable plugged in, and are connected to cable or DSL, and have no suppressor there, you could still get nailed by a lightening strike...

honestly ive had alot of dealings with lightning and power-outs in south florida....surge protectors dont do one darned bit of good so leave it on-- turn it off wont make a hill of beans difference. if u really want to protect ur stuff get a ups and make sure every wire or device connected to ur machine runs through it.

No. Leaving any electrical unit off makes them work better. Try it with your TV. You will see great improvement.
