In my opinion the best invention is......farming!
The reason for this is, without basic farming (i.e. dropping seeds in a hole and watching plants grow) all humans would still be hunter/gatherers, and therfore every invention (except fire) would never have come to pass, as we would have been unable to settle in one place.

Perhaps the simple machines like the lever, inclined plane, wheel et al. They lead to more complex machines.
