California Native plants in her yard, but said the ones she has seen are ugly without color & looked more like weeds. Are there any pretty natives she can plant or has she seen them all?

MASTER GARDENER to the RESCUE. First, keep in mind a nursery is a for profit business. When you have a question they have a financial interest in the answers they give. I refer to it as the $20.00 answer because that is the average price of the stuff they want you to buy that fits the answer they gave to you. The nursery should be the last place you go with a question. Go to the nursery after you do your homework & go armed with some good general knowledge. There are plenty of good places to get answers that are non profit. That is where you get the best answers every time.

Now back to your sister. Sounds a lot like the stuff I was just telling you about. Go to the local big name nursery or garden center & ask about native plants & they'll tell you all kinds of garbage. That is because they don't see native plants. More money in selling you a new 8 pack of annuals every few months.

California if full of beautiful & colorfull natives. San Diego is a desert so to speak. Everything growing around us came from somewhere else. Have your sister contact one of the many wonderful native plant clubs and the local univ extension service & have her speak to a MASTER GARDENER. They will enlighten her on the beauty the landscape & nursery industry don't want her to see. Any good certified horticulturists would never tell your sister to ignor natives.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Many California native plants are dusty green or gray in color and do not fit the model of a lush eastern landscape ideal. There are many natives that are attractive. I suggest visiting Tree of Life Nursery's catalog on the web (they are located in San Juan Capistrano). They have the widest selection of natives in southern California. Don't limit yourself to California natives, though. There are many great plants from similar climates that are quite adaptable to our gardens. Visit Armstrong Garden Center or another reputable nursery for more direct advice.

Good luck.

enable me take the prospect to take your question aside so I comprehend it. isn't California bankrupt? So doesn't that propose that "any" money they spend will be lots. And, the cost of residing is so extreme there that spending money on something in any respect would appear like california become spending a mint on any challenge. Now you stated San Diego, nicely is that a strong position to have a desal plant? i visit't contact upon that because i do not understand the lay of the land. even if that is extra acceptable to have a desal plant than to apply dealt with potty water. i'm in FL and we've a desal plant and it took lots to get it up and dealing because the salt kept ruining the metallic aspects that made the plant artwork. So in case you imagine the initial value is extreme, nicely plan for it being fixed down the line sometime. that is like your position water softener, the salt in that ruins the water pipes and finally those pipes might want to get replaced. The question I continually ask is "why is the united states of a lagging in the back of in putting up desal flora" on account that there are countless them elsewhere interior the international. There are also salt licks, places the position all there is is salt hills. so positive, finally we are going to do ourselves in, yet for the close to destiny what we favor is eating water, so i'd say complete p.c. ahead on the desal flora.
