Depends on where you live. First step would be to choose a political party and contact the county (or state) headquarters for your county chairperson's contact information. I'd set up a meeting with him/her and ask them to explain your county and state's political makeup from your party's standpoint.
Ask them where you can find a listing of all the county (and other) offices and the responsibilities for each. Narrow down which one(s) interest you to serve in and learn about what you can do to beef up your resume for those positions.
In the meanwhile, start getting involved as a volunteer - learn to "collect" people, to network, and build a team of future supporters for yourself. One of the best ways to do this is to volunteer on a campaign - but choose wisely if you don't know the political landscape yet.
Most of all, foster a public servant's heart. Stay in it for the right reasons and don't become negative. Always see what America can be and believe in the role you can play to make it that way.

1) Have lots of money.
2) Know lots of people who run corporations
3) Let those people give you lots of money for your "campaign expenses"
4) During the campaign, say nothing about yourself, attack and belittle your opponent.
5) Promise everything to everyone.
6) Only keep the ones that have been paid for.
7) Remember the chief rule of politics......obeying the rules is for suckers.

Normally you apply as a candidate and get voted into office. Check with your city for information on elections and applying.
