Tommy James message board on ezboard.com:

what does crimson and clover mean???
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello everybody!!! I would like to know if anybody out there is here tonight, what does crimson and clover mean in his song. Like the whole meaning to the song. I dont want to know Joan Jetts version of it, I want to know his version of it. My sister is getting married in september and she would like to play it at her wedding, but she would like to know what the songs means before she plays. So if anybody out there knows the meaning of the song, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Crimson is to Blush, or to be Flushed colour Pink, etc.
Cleave is the past tense to Clove and to cleave means to hold firmly, dearly.
Cleave is also to separate in half to penetrate through.

so my best bet would be not to play a song that says that he wants to make her flush or blush....
not at a wedding.

Well, crimson clover is a plant. The band Tommy James and the Shondells originally made it a huge hit, followed by Joan Jett's rendition, which I think we all know.

I think it just rhymed well with "over and over", but crimson, referring to red, red referring to lust, passion or love, or lipstick, and clover, referring to nature, natural, pleasure, sex, so it's an analogy, I'm guessing, for love and sex, over and over.
