You already know that the only person who can make that decision for you is; you. You can of course go find a new job in a new field, return to college and study a field in which you have a strong interest.....you have several options.
My only suggestion? Keep teaching, if only part time, until you secure a new position. It keeps that "big salary" coming in and employers like to hire people who currently have a job. By the way, after my dad retired as a Commander from the US Navy he became a "teacher" at the university level. He held an advance degree in education and I don't recall him ever saying he was making the big bucks. But as I am sure you know, people don't become teacher for the money; any more than those of us who ever served in the military.
If you're not happy, it affects your health, etc. then I vote to find something you enjoy and then go enjoy doing it. Good luck.

It sounds like you have teacher burnout. I believe anything that "consumes your energy and health" are not worth having in your life. A job isnt the most important thing and if you arent finding fulfillment from it its time to try something new or go a different direction. Many people dont even know what they want to do in life until later down the road.
I say take a good look at what's most important in your life and what will make you happier in the years to come. That coupled with a break from "life",will help you get through. Take up something therapeautic until you make the decision- The best to you!

I would say go back to school, buy a book on what else you can do with a teaching degree(available at amazon.com), or take a sabatical from teaching for a semester or a year. You probably have to have a good reason for doing so, but try writing a manuscript or travel for "educational research", or just go back to school. I think after 12 years, you deserve a break...longer than 3 months in the summer.

Well... people say, that the way you will become most successful in life is by doing what you love. Becoming who you are. But, for a lot of people, that's kind of...hard. Although money is a huge factor in the key to survival, try to...ignore that. Even though you may come to a bad start by doing this, maybe things will pick back up. Do what you love, love what you do. So find the job you love, dont let life pass by too quickly- regret sucks.

The problem is retirement. In Illinois, you have to teach 20 years to be vested in the retirement system. So if you leave now, you are behind since you will get NOTHING from the state or your district for retirement.
Find a part time job and perhaps it will eventually lead to a full time one. But stick with teaching until you get some retirement money.

Either try to change the specific topics that you teach for a fresh start, teach at a different location, or continue your education at night-school or other training so that you can start off at the same level in another career.

You really have to be kidding me. Big salary? I just finished my 8th year in NY, and I keep finding new ways to be active and alive in the field. I recently completed National Certification, why not try that? I have changed preps/classes every few years to keep myself fresh and constantly on my toes. I also have volunteered on various district-wide committees as well as gone back to graduate school to get my admin cert. You need to keep finding ways to motivate yourself. If not, burn out city, which is what is sounds like. You will hate life and your job, take it out on the kids and become one of those teachers.

That's really to bad. It's to bad there's so many negatives for you and it's so hard to find teachers that are GOOD teachers. I can't imagine how hard a job that is. You basically raise other people's children, cause when you get down to it they are with you more than their parent every day! Parents nowadays don't seem to want to get involved with their kids schooling either! It's never to late to do what YOU want to do so, go do it!!!!
