If the rumors turn out to be true, if Materrazi used racial slurs to bother Zidane, he surely needs to be suspended. FIFA ought to be something to put an end to the racism that occurs on the field. It's unbelievable how people turn against each other in what used to be such a beautiful sport.

If Materrazi made refence to Zidane's family being terrorist, they should suspend him. FIFA has made a huge deal about the "no tolerance for racism" but closing their eyes on this would be a huge mistake. They need to set an example and suspend players who are guilty of using racial slurs.

What are we teaching our kids by not doing anything to stop it? Kids will simply mimic their idols and engage in similar disgusting behavior.

Don't take me wrong... Zidane's headbutt was ugly. He should've been the bigger man, yet how would YOU feel if someone said such nasty comment on you. Perhaps it's an issue that's been tormenting him for a while...perhaps other teams have been doing that for a while as a mean to distract him...

Anyways, that's my two cent. :-)

It will be hard to prove anything at this point. But to those claim to be so disappointed in Zidane (as if you really like him in the first place). Have any of you been on the receiving end of a hateful comment, repeatedly. If not, then you should really think before you pass judgment. None of us really know what was said, and believe it or not there are some things that when said to you by some people make you act without the lluxury of reason. If it is true that Materazzi made a racial/religiously insensitive remark that made Zidane act that way then Zidane is beyond an ordinary soccer player. His action is going to be a catalyst for change! Fifa is trying to end such racist behaviour in football. Maybe Zidane's departure in such a manner will get them to do more about such disgraceful and abusive behaviour by some bigots they call football players. Then again, we all do not know what happened before the head butt. We can only speculate, but do so with some sensitivity. Remember, the next World cup is going to be in South Africa, and if you know anything about history you know what that nation symbolizes. If I were Zidane I would dedicate the rest of my career fighting the bigots in football. That will be the best thing he does for football and to me a perfect justification for how he exited...

since FIFA made a big deal about racism throughout the World Cup. I think Materrazi should be suspended for at least two games. otherwise you're just encouraging racism. besides Zidane will be fined and suspended even though he's retiring.

Come on!
Everything was meant to be like that.
It was right on target to have Zidane out of the game, any which way.
Especially in Germany, like a home crowd.
Wait and see, nothing will be done.

If he indeed said something racist, then yes, but I don't think he did. Wait for Zidane to explain his actions, instead of providing him with possible scenarios to justify his actions.

Nope. For one thing, there's no proof of what he said. This will be one of those "he said ... he said" sort of things with one guy's word against the other.

It also gets back to the old saying, "Sticks and stones may break my bones ... but words will never hurt me."

Materrazi's offense (whatever it was) was just words ... Zidane's was physical, and could have caused serious injury or death.

He could could have called him a ugly pig ******* a 300 pound woman for all that matters. The truth of the fact is that when you are in front of a crowd like the one watching the world cup, there is no, and absolutly no reason for him to act the way he did. You just cannot do that.

Bad sportsmanship
