If he doesn't have a savings account take him to start one. A gifted 11 year old will probably like this because it gives him a little control over his future. For a minor's savings account there can be no withdrawals without the adult present, but he can start saving part of his present or chore money and begin to see how much work it takes to make money.

Make sure he always keeps some for himself.

If you want to give him $40 suggest $20 in the bank and $20 for shopping. Take him for the day and let him decide on a gift. Remember that a gifted 11 year old might be bored with a traditional eleven year old chemistry set but will still be too young for teen or adult labeled video games.
Academic success does not translate to extra maturity. He is still eleven so be careful with movies, games, etc.

No kidding--this is crazy! im 11 and I am legally gifted too! I'm going into grade 8! email me back pleeeeeeease at elgenius94@yahoo.ca maybe we could be penpals! (or we could be the same guys--if so, thx)

Anyway, for an answer to your question, try a gyroscope, science kit, or maybe a nice thick book. Maybe a small laptop or a strategy video game like Age Of Empires or LOTR the battle for middle-earth, even Age of Mythology (this game rules).

How about a "popcorn" rock? If you put it in vinegar, it fizzes, then as the vinegar evaporates over the next few days, crystals form on the surface with a popcorn-like appearance. It is pretty fun to do, and you can add a drop of food colouring and try again as many times as you like.

How about the game Rush Hour? It is from MENSA and is sold at Amazon.Com or you could get him a giftcard from the Discovery Channel store online?
Good Luck with your decision.

A nuclear reactor set. For a gifted kid, it beats the old time tinker toys or Lincoln logs hands-down.

Just get him a gift card for a store that everyone likes-like Target!

If he's gifted, just buy him a laptop or a Radio Shack electronic board (you can make projects on it, like radios or radars). I'm sure your son will delighted and grateful.

If he's into fantasy or science fiction novels he'd probably enjoy role-playing games. Look into D&D or Starwars to start, though there's literally hundreds to pick from.
