Nerve pain is caused by a combination of pressure and inflammation on the nerve root, and treatment is centered on relieving both of these factors. Typical sciatica treatments include:
* Manual treatments for sciatica, including physical therapy and specific stretching and strengthening exercises, and manual manipulation (e.g. osteopathic or chiropractic manipulation) to help relieve the pressure on the nerve root, which is the cause of the pain.
* Medical treatments for sciatica, including medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), oral steroids, or epidural steroid injections to help relieve the inflammation, which is usually a component of the pain.
* Surgery for sciatica, such as microdiscectomy or lumbar laminectomy and discectomy, to remove the portion of the disc that is irritating the nerve root. This surgery is designed to help relieve both the pressure and inflammation and may be warranted if the sciatic nerve pain is severe and has not been relieved with appropriate manual or medical treatments.
Your doctor should be able to tell you what the best treatment is for your case. Just the same, check this out: Treatments for sciatica

The key points about most back pain and sciatica are:
Do not worry - it will usually get better on its own, within a few days, or possibly a few weeks.
Stay active, and if at all possible, stay at work.
The pain may force you to rest, but this is a result of the pain, and not a good treatment for back pain and sciatica. If you have to take to your bed, limit it, if possible, to a week or two at the most.
Use simple pain killers, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen if necessary.
Avoid activities likely to put unnecessary strain on your back.
See your doctor if you think you are in one of the red flag categories, or are worried about how you are doing.
If it seems to be lasting more than a few days, consider seeing a physiotherapist, chiropractor or osteopath. You may wish to consult your doctor prior to this.
If you do have to be off work, keep this to a minimum, and do not expect to be pain free before you go back.
If the pain is severe and very disabling, and you cannot control it with simple pain killers and/or anti-inflammatory medication, your doctor may suggest you have an epidural injection, which is an injection into the spine, which soothes the nerves that are causing the pain.
In a minority of cases, the sciatica does not settle, or complications arise. This may lead your doctor to recommend surgery, which will involve trimming back bone or disc material which is pressing on the nerve or nerves. This is not undertaken lightly, and will be guided by the results of a CT or MRI scan.

Check here a very effective Sciatica Natural Treatment ( http://cure-sciatica.info )
Normally, I would not answer a question like this as my expertise is generally in medication but I had severe sciatica while I was pregnant with my 3rd child (after having had twins) and I had sciatica so bad that I was finding it difficult to walk. I tried massage therapy and physical therapy and could not take medication
I went to the chiropractor and the pain was instantly relieved. My hips and lower back were out of alignment because I had carried twins the year before. On occasion a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) can also work but they usually only work on one joint at a time - the chiropractor will do your whole back which works faster. Anyone who does not believe in chiropractors will tell you they are quacks - don't listen.
I don't necessarily believe that chiropractors can cure things like diabetes but they can definitely relieve some types of back pain especially if a pinched nerve is involved which is usually the cause of sciatica.

Well any medicine only covers up the issue. Cortisone shots will help, but only for a while. Sciatica is when your Sciatic nerve gets pinched by one of your lumbar vertebrae. Usually to correct this, it requires physical therapy in the form of traction, and ultrasound, followed by myamassage. 2-3 times a week of this too. The ultimate correction, is surgery. Exercises can also be helpful. Speak to your doctor about getting a script to see a physical therapist.

Well, I can make you a suggestion:
Go for a manual one-time treatment called Atlasprofilax. The effect on the self-healing power of the body is simply amazing - own experience. :-)
Specially for sciatica it's known that the nerve stops to produce wrong information after a certain time due to the liberated information flow.
The treatment is available in California and Europe only - it's really worth travelling far for the one treatment in your lifetime.

Nobody gave the correct answer. You must first determine the root cause. If it is a herniated disk or ruptured disk, then you must not continue to do the same things, you must get the disk to shrink. You can do this by using any number of antiiflammatories. Ibuprofen is okay, but many people prefer aleve. Baclofen is a prescription med. Epidural injections of methylprednisolone help many. There are no good natural cures. Until the disk is healed no acupuncturist, chiropractor or PT should touch you, if they do they run the risk of creating permanent damage. If the sciatic nerve is simply inflammed by itself, which is rare, you need to use cold then hot packs around your lumbar area and just below your buttocks. Take 200-800 mg of Ibuprofen, but in order for it to heal you must rest it, because in this case overuse is the culprit. This goes for tennis elbow and carpal tunnel as well. When athletes get these injuries do they sit out a while or do they still play? They sit it out!.

The main thing is to discover the causation.. it may remiss but the problem remains there, until the next time you move just the right way.
There are 2 professionals who treat this sort of condition.. osteopaths and chiroprators..If it is beyond their method of treatment, surgery would be required.
This is not a condition that takes care of itself.. if not taken care of, it will involve other areas of the spine. Is a progressive process designed to keep the body away from the level of pain associated with this particular condition.
