Actually, I concur with the answer above about hitchhiking! I've done it many times across Eastern Europe, but my life has never been endangered as a result. I have even hitchhiked alone from Belarus to Ukraine to back home in southern Russian Federation. It's not so much that I can't afford to travel as it is something really stupid and fun to do...being inexpensive is just a nice coincidence. Nearly each summer my friend and I traveled out to his dacha in Romania; we're trying to make plans to go this January again. We usually went with his parents until we turned 15 or 16; we told them that we were going to have train tickets there, but we really hitchhiked. Mum doesn't even know yet, and hopefully she never will! The most exciting hitchhiking story I've got is that one time, we both fell asleep, and the man didn't know where we wanted to stop. We were supposed to stop at Z^arnes,ti (Romania), but we woke up in Tirgu Mures, instead! We walked for so long and found no cars willing to take us that we just decided to walk along the roads in the Carpathian Mountains and hope we could meet someone who would take us! We ended up spending 3 nights in the mountains, but we weren't lost; we spent lots of time in the villages we went through on the way to the dacha (which is a summer house) in Bac^au. We spent only one of the three inside of a building really...it was a farmer's house who we paid for the service, and the only reason was that it was raining! In those sort of villages in Romania and Moldova especially, you'll see horse-drawn wagons, and the farmers will often take you along for a small bribe. Those people are usually quite decent and interesting, yet, they're so vile and dirty for hygiene, but my family and my friend's family are considered well-to-do even by North American standards, and it's nice to escape the fancy life for a time!
Also, the next year (I think), we hitchhiked through Ukraine, Belarus, Latvia, and Estonia to the Baltic Sea, and convinced a fisherman to take us to Finland...ha ha...his boat was trashed, and my friend thought we were going to die from it sinking, but we made it to Helsinki! So, that was a different sort of hitchhiking. Needless to say, we just hitchhiked to Sankt Petersburg (Russian Federation), and took a train to a town close to home, but not too close so that we could finish it by hitchhiking!
Sorry if I've made you bored with cities that you've probably never heard of, but I tried to mention only the bigger cities so that you could follow it! I am just unable to sleep...I've only slept for 5 hours because I keep taking naps. But even answering this question has made me tired again (because maybe I even make myself bored); so, I'm going to go work outside and take another nap right away! It's just the travel, and I'll adjust soon! :) The Jell-O is doing well...it made the journey; the airline security was tempted to take it because it's Jell-O of course, but it made it!

My cousin and I hitchhiked across country and back on semi trucks. It was the most exciting thing I ever did. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. A trucker tried to murder both of us and we had to run for our lives and hide under a porch. He came after us to the house and was walking around with an ax looking for us. All I could see was his legs and the ax. After about 10 minutes he took off. True story.....)(
