Birching was being whipped by a birch rod for misdemeanours.
It was still carried out as a punishment on the isle of man long after it had stopped in the uk.

Birch is a type of wood, it is fairly stiff with some spring. Birch twigs were used for brooms.
The birch means whipping offenders across their bare back or backside. Two of the reasons it was dicontinued include
- Punishment doesn't prevent crime
- The people who deallt out the punishment sometimes were overenthusiastic or got off on it.

Birching is a form of punishment using a birch cane or thin branch. As the wood is pliable it is capable of leaving welts on the skin and is very painful (similar to being whipped I am told).

for criminals they used THE CAT O NINE TAILS apparently very painful when beaten with this. People say they should bring it back cause if someone was beaten with this they would never again commit a crime. Also taken from the name of the tree -birch-- as a rod which was flexible for punishment

It means whipping them with bundles of big birch tree branches on the back and shoulders.

It was used in the 19th century by teachers in schools and by officers on men in the Royal Navy. I don't believe it was ever used to punish civilian criminals.

The last hanging in the UK took place in 1964.
