I know that the series came out somewhere between 85 and 95. They may be in some role playing genre I don't know. I have no idea as to the author. I know that there are wizards who take power from the earth around them as well as wizards that take it from the blood of others other than that I have no other clues.

Wizards and kanks are featured in "Dark Sun," a version of Dungeons & Dragons set on a desert world called Athas.

Novels with a "Dark Sun" background include:

* Prism Pentad - Troy Denning
1. The Verdant Passage (October 1991)
2. The Crimson Legion (April 1992)
3. The Amber Enchantress (October 1992)
4. The Obsidian Oracle (June 1993)
5. The Cerulean Storm (September 1993)

* Tribe of One - Simon Hawke
1. The Outcast (November 1993)
2. The Seeker (April 1994)
3. The Nomad (October 1994)

* Chronicles of Athas
1. The Brazen Gambit (July 1994), by Lynn Abbey
2. The Darkness Before the Dawn (February 1995), by Ryan Hughes
3. The Broken Blade (May 1995), by Simon Hawke
4. Cinnabar Shadows (July 1995), by Lynn Abbey
5. The Rise & Fall of a Dragon King (April 1996), by Lynn Abbey

Apparently, there are definitely kanks in the "Trube of One" trilogy. Not sure about the others.
