I agree that it is not a natural look.

But before you (and some of the answerers) condemn women that do this, it might help to be more aware of what it is like to be a woman in most of the societies in the world.

Women are judged on their appearance first, and on personality and intelligence second. And that can make a lot of women very anxious about the way they look.

I am not sure that these women do think they look good - but if they do, well, we all have ways of deceiving ourselves.

In an ideal world, parents would help their daughters to feel that they looked good and that they were loved however they looked, but it is not an ideal world.

Fashions come and go. In the early eighties, it was a cool look to have strong, thick eyebrows (like Margo Hemingway in "Manhattan" ) But at other times, there have been fashions for very thin lines of eyebrows.

I remember when there was a trend for thin, "well defined" eyebrows, and, as mine are naturally quite dark and not thin, I can remember being mocked by some other women. I was able to ignore this, and kept my eyebrows as they were, but not everyone has the confidence to do this.

I do think that many women who naturally have very bushy or straggly eyebrows, can benefit by having their eyebrows shaped by a professional beautician. I agree, a thin line looks artificial and changes the woman's natural expression and that should be avoided - but we all make mistakes!

To some extent, we all want to fit in, and a lot of women change their look according to fashion, or sometimes following bad advice from a friend, lover or even a beautician.

There is a fine line....between plucking your eyebrows (which is not permanent) to enhance the shape of your eyes, which works wonderfully (and should be done by a professional, at least the first time) to over-doing the look...

I have a close woman friend who, several years ago, had her eyebrows removed permanently by electrolysis. She regrets it now, but there is nothing she can do. So she is one of the women you describe - who pencils a this line where her eyebrows should be - but she is a lovely person.

So maybe we should stop "seeing" the mistakes and the imperfections in how people look, and give them a chance to show us their inner beauty.

I've noticed how all of you are really quick to judge other people, and really closed-minded so as not to think of any plausible explanations. So what if YOU don't like something? People like different things. I don't think anybody posting here has stopped to think that hey--maybe we like doing it? Perhaps there are actual reasons? You're so ready to call it "retarted" and "ugly" but have you ever taken a second to think, who gives a sh!t if YOU think it's ugly? That's not of any consequence. I actually had to laugh everytime I read someone try to answer the question with, "It's because they're lazy." I'm a male who's been drawing my brows on for almost 2 years, and I'll tell you right now that getting them even and straight is not an easy task. It has nothing to do with OCD and overplucking. Perhaps you're all the "retarted" ones. We like the look. Enough said. If you can't deal with that, kindly sod off, thanks. Nobody gives a sh!t about what you have to say.

Well, it all starts out innocently. You have really bushy eyebrows and it hurts so much to pluck that you decide to do it the easy way and shave a little here, and a little there. Oops, a little too much there, let's even them up. Darn, a little too much off there now. Aw hell, just shave them all off and draw them in and wait for them to grow back.

The shape of your eyebrows really can change your face for better or for worse. Your face-shape determines what kind of eyebrows would best suit you, and frankly, some women think that shaving off your eyebrows and starting again will make you prettier.

You are usually born with the eyebrows which best shape your face. Unfortunately, over-exuberant plucking will often result in a "startled bird" look, which is often unnatracive... DUH!

Some women cant afford (or arent brave enough) to get their eyebrows shaped professionally, which would be the best way to go about it.

Some times it is to get eyebrows to match dye jobs, or sometimes blodes get their eyebrows (and eyelaskes) darkened so they can be seen.

They don't SHAVE their eyebrows, any decent lady will know that if you shave your eyebrows, as with shaving anything else, the hairs will just come back quicker, thicker and darker than before. What usually happens is that a girl will go over the top with PLUCKING and look a little bald (probleme being that if you pluck too much they won't grow back again...). To rectify this you have to draw your eyebrows back on so as not to look ridiculous problem being that finding the exact colour of your eyebrows isn't exactyl different, unless you want to look like aweirdo walking into a cosmetics shop with one of your eyebrow hairs saying excuse me...do you have this shade...? Get my jist?
Ladies, get them waxed, easier, les painful as it's quicker and it doesn't grow back as quickly! AND you don't run the risk of looking like an plucked chicken!
P.S Some people who have cancer lose their eyebrows too...

Plucking the brows eventually causes the brows to not grow back in again.
If someone over-plucks, they can be left with no brows at all, so they paint them on. Excessive plucking is a symptom of OCD.

Be sure you do the least possible plucking. It's better to shave the brows in the areas you don't want them.

it depends.

It was in style in the 1950s and lots of women did it then.

Sometimes a women does this because she wants to change the look/shape of her face.

Sometimes a woman doesn't like the way her eyebrows look.

sometimes eyebrows get really thin, because of disease, and a woman will draw them back in.

different colors? i only know about women with light blond hair drawing their eyebrows in dark brown or black.

Any other colors? For drama.

In Egypt. Cleopatra was actually very ugly and not attracxtive to many of the Men. So she insisted that her maids get her the best make up they could find in Egypt and painted her up to look pretty and that started the Fad back then to women to start wearing make-up. It is a very true no kidding here. Look it up on line you'll see.

I'm a woman, and I think that is about one of the stupidest things in the world to do. I've never understood it either. I think they are just retarded for doing that. If they want to change the color of their eyebrows why don't they just use brow tint. That at least would make it more natural looking.
