$18,000 a year and 12 years or$ 216,000 total , well i hope that the child support went to the child , even $400 a month in a bank account for the child's education at 12 years would be $57,600plus compounded interest for 12 years approximately it would be close to $ 80,000 .that would make a big dent in to a college education. i don't like to pre judge people but i would make a small wager there is no money left for the child, I am sure you were alone a while, and a child support payment would have greatly improved your life, even if it was for a short time . this person sounds somewhat bitter, and unsatisfied with her life.and your right she would not accept reality very well, and you would be walking on thin ice to try to reason with her, i would try to change the subject when it comes up. you have had a long relationship with this person there must be something there between you two that can get you two over the bridge. I wish i could offer more.

Tell her that while you want to support her a a friend and be there for her emotionally, you can't solve her financial woes. When she starts complaining about finances again, let her vent a tad and empathasize a little, then change the subject or move onto something else.

I would simply tell her to count her blessings. Then I would tell her to grow up and get on with her life and be grateful she is done with her ex. Karma will come around to bite her if she keeps complaining!
