Speaking as a college professor with an M.B.A., I can say that there's no magic formula for gaining teaching employment today. Full-time is much harder because literally everyone out there has a Masters.

If you're going to work at one of the larger universities, like the University of Oregon for instance, a doctorate is probably necessary.

To teach on the community college level, a doctorate isn't necessary. Why? Because they focus more on the practical side rather than the researching and theory sides of larger universities.

I've taught on both levels, full and part-time. FYI, full-time work is fewer and farther between, but they are out there. If you have no teaching experience at all, then you might start as an Adjunct working part-time just to get your feet wet. But then again, if you have the kind of business experience they need, they might just take you on as a full-timer.

Most universities (and I think this is true of the CA system as well) require the terminal degree. The difficulty one encounters, however, are disparities in hiring practices. In the Humanities, for example, academia is very much a buyers' market: I start a new position this fall, and I've taught in three universities in the past four years, climbing my way up the ladder. Some schools you encounter may conduct that type of search, while others will adhere to a much more traditional business model--they are always, in effect, hiring, and they'll review each candidate as he or she arrives on a case by case basis.

You may need to seek out the Ph.D. in order to enter the teaching ranks, but the good news is that Business profs with real world experience are more often able to parley that knowledge into a teaching position. When I apply for academic jobs, I have to broadcast my application and hope for the best. A friend of mine who's finishing up his degree at Penn State, however, has already begun calling around, letting schools know he'll soon be available for hire. It's still hit or miss, but you can target the kind of place you wish to end up at with much greater accuracy.

Of course, be sure to check the kind of credentials that profs hold at the schools that interest you. Business programs tend to be more of a sellers' market, as they know that, in most cases, the people who want to teach for them could just as easily take their skills out into the open market.

I am sure you can teach at the Community College level because that is the type of degree my Economics professor had, but I think to teach in a state university you would need a doctorate degree.
