A lot depends on the distance you have to travel and how you yourself plan to get there. If you are making a long trip (say you live in PA but you're going to school in CA) and plan to stay there for all four years, it may be wise to hire a moving company. Consult with your university--they may have special arrangements with some movers that can net you a signficant discount.
If you're traveling locally, you may only need to rent a U-Haul. Pragmatically, that may result in a round trip, or you might wind up towing your car behind you (they rent trailers for that).
Finally, if you have a limited number of possessions, the easiest thing to do might be to just drive down with a stuffed car. You can always take the things you need for fall when you drive down the first time, and then pick up the other things you need over Christmas.

my mom rents a van every year since my car can't fit all of my things. usually parents are pretty good about helping move in unless your college is really far away from your home. if that's the case, a lot of college residence halls let you ship large boxes there so that you'll have all your things in one place when you're ready to move in, if you make the proper arrangements. and then once you get all of your stuff there i'd recommend getting some storage or something if your college is real far away from your house...just so that you don't have to worry about shipping your things back and forth.

I packed everything in my car and drove it there. Anything I could live without of a few weeks, I had my parents ship to me by mail.

I had a pick up truck when I went. I just loaded everything up, and put a water proof tarp on everything. Then tied them down with buggie cords.
