It is often called a harvest moon, and we often see it in the northern hemisphere between late August and Early October which happens to also be harvest season. I don't know all of the details, but I believe it has to do with a combination of the particles in the air, the temperature and the angle of the moon to the earth in relation to the sun at that time of year. It was used to help farmers decide when to harvest, so even without understanding the phenomenon, ancient people could tell what it meant to their lives.

I saw that last night too... it goes by different names (I've heard of harvest moon and strawberry moon before) and is caused because the moon at that point is nearly behind the earth. Not so much that it causes an eclipse, but because the light you see is coming from the sun, then grazing through Earth's atmosphere, then hitting the moon, then bouncing back towards the Earth and then to your eyes. When the light passes through Earth's atmosphere the first time some of the light rays will scatter and then not get to the moon in the first place. The light rays that make it though the atmosphere the first time tend to have a longer wavelength = tend to look red and orange to your eyes. The same phenomenon is why the sky at sunset or sunrise has an orange-red color, because that's when the light rays are traveling through more atmosphere because of the angle.

Harvest moon. I saw that happen once when we drove to Arizona...it was incredible and i wish I'd had a camera. The moon was blood-red for about an hour above the southern part of the US.

that is not. that is called a "harvest moon." A "blue moon" is even as there are 2 complete moons interior of an same calendar month. because the moon has a mode of 28-day cycle, it occurs once a year or so. i'm not positive if that is the first complete or second complete that is called the "blue" moon.

The reason for the color is that when the suns rays pass through the atmosphere, and they bend, red is what isn't filtered out, plus dust particles can also have a big effect.
