don't do that, there are times when they are full & then you're at the station for lord knows how long. I had a Eurail pass in Paris & wanted to go to Madrid & shock of shocks even though we had the pass, b/c we didn't reserve a sleeper cab or some seat we had to wait 6 hours for the next train. yes, we got there, but uh, do you REALLY want to wait 6 hours hoping 'maybe' to get on the next train? Not a good look.

It is a good idea to purchase your ticket online (http://www.thalys.com) before you go. This is because the trains are full during the summer by people who make reservations in advance. The best idea is to take an overnight train so you can sleep on the train and save $$$ on hotel. I think it took about 7 hours, and it was a fun train ride since the backpackers and the locals were friendly.
I thought the EuroRail pass was a pain and not really worth it unless you are travelling around for more than 3 weeks.

The Paris-Amsterdam high speed trains needs reservation.
You can do it and see other features of the trip at: http://www.thalys.com And yes, if you will do a lot of trips, its better to purchase an Eurail pass, but you will need reservation too.
