Sure. Laid off means there is no work for you currently, but when there is, they'll call you back. Fired is permanent vacation.

Technically speaking, yes. Legally speaking, double yes!
Being LAYED OFF means that there is a lack of work. In human resource terms, being laid off has nothing to do with you abilities, your availability, or the quality of your work. There is no FAULT in being laid off. Generally one will see lay-offs when there is a slow-down of work product, or there is an unexpected abundance of employees. If you are laid off, the employer is not claiming any wrong-doing on your part.
Conversely, being FIRED connotates fault. "Terminated" is also a word synnonimous with being fired. Perhaps one was not there on time, did poor performance of the job, or was unable or unwilling to do the job once hired to perform it. If you are fired, you always have a right to appeal, but it suggests that the worker has not done their part in doing what they were hired for according to the rules and regulations adopted by the company.

Laid off means your job is no longer there, whether permanently or temporarily. In theory if the company has more work in the future you'd be called back. Layoffs are usually announced in advance so that people can start looking for other work.
Fired means your job is still there but you're not going to be doing it anymore. You usually don't get much advanced notice, if any; they don't want you screwing around as revenge before leaving.
In practice there's little difference because both qualify you for workman's comp. and your former employer isn't allowed to tell future employers why you don't work there any more. But 'laid off' sounds a lot better than 'fired' on your next job application because then it wasn't your fault.

BIG difference. "Laid Off" is where the employer does'nt need you anymore (going out of business, downsizing, closing a department, sales decreasing, etc..). "Fired" means the employer doesn't want you as an employee anymore for other reasons that have to do with you, not with the company. For example, you were not able to do the job, or had a bad attitude at work, or never were on time, or stole company property, etc.. If you are "laid off". the employer probably will not be hiring someone to replace you. But if you are "fired". the employer probably will be replacing you.

Layed off - unemployment eligible, fired - either decrease in unemployment benefits or no benefits depending on the reason for firing. But be truthful to your next employer which one it was, during a background check if you lie and say you were laid off and you were fired the former employer has the right to clarify the reason why you no longer work for them. Also, if you lie to unemployment they may disqualify you from receiving benefits all together because you lied.

Typically being fired is due to something negative. Stealing, late all the time, etc.
Layoffs are more related to business decisions.
Biggest difference is collecting unemployment. Quitting a job, or being fired makes it harder to qulify for the benefit, than if you had been layed off.

Absolutely! Being laid-off simply means that you're being let go temporarily. But when a layoff is over, the company will bring you back.
This contrasts with being fired, which means "You're outta here! Finito, gone forever!"
As far as future employment, being fired or terminated means you were not a good worker. Being laid-off means you're work is good, but the company is temporarily letting you go due to market conditions being worse than before. Once things improve, you'll return to work as if nothing happened.

Being layed off is when your position is no longer needed or company downsizing or going out of business getting fired is when you did something wrong, like stole, slept with the bosses wife lol. or simply incompetent.
In short being laid off is because the company no longer needs you or can afford to pay you. Fired means they no longer want to employ you.

Yes. Being layed off may be a result of a reduction in workforce because there isn't enough work. Being fired is typically a result of violating a policy (i.e. attendance) or not meeting the expectations of your boss (performance related). When one gets laid off the company will not fight against you rec'd unemployment benefits.

Being layed off means that the company that you worked for is downsizing and they no longer need your services. Being fired means that your job position is still a valuable position, but you are no longer needed at the company.

Technically there is a difference:
Being fired: Basically you suck, you've insulted someone or you're just useless.
Being laid off: The company/organization no longer has the money to support you or your job.
If someone is fired usually it's just that one person, or other people involved if there is a scandal or a certain even. Laid off can involve thousands of people if profits aren't what they were expected to be.
