they aren't supposed to be uncomfortable at ALL if you wear the right size.
I don't think they are uncomfortable.
Get fitted for one proffessionally, it's embarrassing but worth it.

Have you ever tried something called a bralette? It is like a sports bra, but much much much looser. I got mine from victoria's secret in the body collection. It is just like a little camisole with elastic under the bottom. It is light support. I think they also have it in cotton. The body line has no metal in it. No snaps or hooks or anything. Just soft elastic. You could not use it for sports because you would bounce everywhere. It is just light. I love them. I have 2.
Also what about just wearing a plain camisole? It would give you coverage. Or a tank top layer under clothes.
There are also natural cotton bras made by alternative companies that are all cotton and much more comfortable. I hope this helps. I know it is hard in the summer. When I was smaller I went without sometimes by wearing dresses with smocking, and tank tops under other shirts. It is fine. You do not have to wear one all the time. It is a turn on for boyfriends.
Also get professionally measure you might be in the wrong size, but you still do not have to wear a conventional one.

Go get fitted at a proper shop. Most likely the problem is that you're just wearing a bra that doesn't fit you properly.

DEPENDING ON HOW LARGE BUSTED YOU ARE THERE ARE SOME REALLY GREAT SPORT BRAS OUT THERE AND THEY ARE VERY COMFORTABLE...YOU HAVE THE WRONG SIZE BRA TO START WITH...THAT COULD BE THE REASON THAT THEY ARE YOU.......THERE IS A CERTAIN WAY TO MEASURE YOURSELF TO FIND OUT WHAT SIZE BRA TO WEAR AND I'M NOT SURE HOW YOU DO IT NOW...BUT IF YOU GO ON THE WEB UNDER BALI,MAIDENFORM OR HAN ES.....THEY WE TELL YOU HOW TO MEASURE SO YOU KNOW WHAT SIZE TO BUY...THAT REALLY BE THE PROBLEM...THAT IS MOST FEMALE PROBLEM...AND IF THE BRA ISN'T THE RIGHT SIZE IT CAN CAUSE DISCOMFORT ON YOUR SHOULDERS, RIB CAGE AND BACK...SO TRY THIS OUT AND MAYBE YOU HAVE A NEW BRA SIZE...................

Try sports bras or wife beater shirts. They support your boobs without that irritating feeling.
