I know that is a very broad question, since it depends how "o.k" we are talking about. But I'd like to get some general impressions. Also, could it be done with just a book or do I need to take lessons?

its gonna depend on how your fingers hold up and practice..practice..practice. you can get a tabliture book of something you like, and it keeps it more interesting.

well, that is indeed a broad question.

It really depends on a couple of things
1. are you serious about learning to play
2. what type of music are you looking to play
3. do you have any msical knowledge at all
4. how much are you prepared to give in order to get

if you are looking to play greenday, nirvana, etc... I taught my daughter some songs in a couple of days, but that is VERY BASIC music that is very easy to play.

if you want to play like vai, satriani, bb king, eric clapton, jimi hendrix. Well, that's another thing alltogether and will take serious time and dedication.

What you do is go down to a music store, get a second hand guitar, I recomend electric because it's more fun, and an amp. ask the person there to recomend some books and ask if they give lessons.

Don't spend too much money on your first gear, you may find out that it's alot of work and not like it.

Lessons are a big plus, speeds things along quite a bit. most importantly, have fun with it and practice lots.

I agree a couple of years, and lots of practice sound about right. You’ll need a decent guitar to play well. “The Ultimate Beginner Series” instructional DVDs helped me the most of all. They have different styles, and it works. Go for it!

Nevermind the times... Just get a guitar and start playing it! In the next year you're definitely gonna be a better guitarist than now, and you won't even sweat it.

Ive played for seven years and I, personally still think that I suck but my friends and family tell me that Im good, I cant help but think that theyre humoring me...I would say that it took me about two years to be really good at all the chords, and I am constantly trying to imporve my technique....it's literally a never-ending learning experience
