I have LAN connection, and I normally use it on my laptop (I'm using my desktop right now)... well, I was away for a few days and when I came back and tried to connect it's unresponsive. The computer sometimes detects the connection and works OK for a lil' bit, but after 2 or 3 minutes it's as if there's nothing connected... I have a SB5100 SURFboard Motorola cable modem. tried connecting it to another computer and it works perfectly...I also tried with another cable, so the problem is with my laptop. does anyone know how to solve this problem? My laptop is a Compaq Armada M700 and it uses Windows XP professional. thanks.

sounds likea a bad network card

have a computer geek (I am sure there is always one around) remove it start the computer p turn it off put the card back in and see if that works if not then replace the card with a new one

contact www.compaq.com and tell them you got a network card that you would like to exchange because the one I have is defective and they will give you instructions how to go about it.

when you get the card pop it back in your laptop and button it up and it should work that is all I know right now

Paul G has a good answer. If that doesn't work go to control panel-network connections and make sure that the "local area connection" is the only one enabled by right clicking the other wireless connections and "disabling" them. Believe it or not a wireless card can pick up on a LAN. Good luck.

Somehow your network connection may have been set not to automatically retrieve an IP address.

In "Network Connections", right-mouse click on the network connection that you're trying to use, select "Properties", click on "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)", click the "Properties" button and make sure that the "Obtain an IP Address automatically" radio button is selected.

If it isn't select "Obtain an IP address automatically", and click OK buttons until you get back to the Network Connections window.

If that doesn't work, call the administrator of the network that you were using while you were away and ask them what might have changed.

Good Luck!
