I believe they sneak into the space between the washing machine tub part and the outside of the machine.
Anyway, when you go to heaven all your missing socks are returned to you. That's right, isn't it? Anyone?
As for the remaining socks, I keep them in a plastic bag next to the machine, 'cos sometimes old socks reappear in subsequent washes - I think they get tired of just hanging out in the dark interior of the machine. Every now and then I'll have a look in the bag and see if anything matches. Actually, with my kids' socks, I just buy all the same kind so that pretty much they all match and I can only end up with one odd sock rather than 20.
Otherwise, odd socks are good for storing marbles - in case you might be losing those too.

I swear the washers and dryers are some sort of teleportation device that takes those socks everywhere but where they should be. Seriously, though, this actually happened to me. When my kids were very small I did my laundry as usual one day. The next time I went to use the washing machine, it wouldn't spin or agitate. My husband took the washer apart thinking it was a belt and lo and behold he found a sock between the outer console and the tub. The washer worked fine after he took the sock out and put the washer back together.
Nowadays when socks go missing it's usually my teenagers socks. I put the singles in a pile and usually find the missing partners when my boys clean up their rooms.

I used to find that missing socks ended up under the washer drum (the spinner part) or they ended up behind the dryer drum. It's a pain in the tush though to search for them in those places.
I've found that the extra socks make great dusters. Just slip the sock on your hand and spray some Pledge (or whatever you use) on it. It makes a great way for little ones to help with dusting. (They think it's fun...go figure...LOL). Another good use for those extra socks if you have younger children, is sock puppets. Easy to make and the kids love it.
I usually try to buy socks though that are the same, that way if one gets a hole in it, gets discolored or gets stretched out, I have a spare to make a new full set.

at very last this secret is solved by potential of a $2 million learn performed by technique of Washington State college in 2003: After inventorying 1638 washloads by technique of school scholars, both before and after the completed laundry procedure, it became determined that the most likely reason behind lacking socks became that a lacking sock had, by potential of the motions of both the washer and/or dryer, led to it to flow right into a pants leg or blouse/jacket sleeve. therefore, after ending up a washload and attempting to detect a lacking sock, it ought to no longer be modern in maximum circumstances by technique of the pupil because it became no longer conceived that the lacking sock, having been considered entering contained in the washer/dryer, ought to nevertheless be with the garments. Erroneously, some scholars concluded that the lacking sock(s) must have both been eaten by technique of the dryer, taken by technique of gnomes, or one-footed extraterrestrial beings. exceptionally-experienced analyze workers later confirmed scholars the lacking sock(s) already of their laundry that were up the pants legs or blouse/jacket sleeves. In uncommon circumstances, the sock(s) even managed to get into wallet.

well in my family I've trained everyone to think that red stripes and green dots are a pair - meaning it is the biggest waste of time making pairs cause it doesn't matter-
I wanted to start a store called three is a pair
If all of us got together all over the world and stopped wearing matching socks then the sock industry would go bust

Socks are by nature small helpless creatures, often preyed upon by larger, carnivorous beasts. This is the way of things. As the owl hunts the mouse, as the bobcat hunts the rabbit, and as the lion hunts the zebra, so too does the mighty dryer hunt and devour the hapless sock. It is a tragic but unavoidable truth in this often cruel world in which we live.
