It's about putting everything you have into each shot.
Funny note: I got an email a few months ago from someone who had found Maria Sharapova's "grunts" that could be used as a ringtone. Cracked me up!

It has always been around. But, yes, more so today mainly because power has become such a huge aspect of tennis.
But as far as the reason, it can be anything from habit (since playing tennis at 5 years old) to intimidation to the physical benefits of exhaling.

When you but a grunt or a yell when you are hitting it seams to give you some more power. It really helps when you are sirving to have a big breathin when you throw the ball and lets it out at the same time you are hitting the ball. Grunting or yelling is just the same it gives you more power!

It's pretty annoying and some of them do it to disguise the sound of the impact of the ball on the racket and to distract their opponent. At least Monica Seles isn't around anymore, she was the worst. The old greats never had to do it...

This is so the players can put all of their strength into that shot and also put enough topspin.

it helps you stay focused and to give it all you have in each shot
p.s. it also helps with your breathing so you don't hold your breath while you hit
