The point of your existence is whatever you decide it to be. Sure, you can look at yourself as an extremely complex chemical catalyst, but you do think, you do perceive the world around you, and you are self aware.
We each have the capacity to enjoy our lives and to learn and discover along the way. Enjoy your part of the journey. Don't worry about the final destination.

Well, you're right it would work just fine, but it's not a feasible idea. Thing is, it's really really far to get to the nearest black hole...I mean reeeeeally far. So it wouldn't matter if you put all the trash on a ship and sent it to a black hole, you could just send it away anywhere, because by the time that the ship actually reached a black hole and got sucked in there, so much time would have passed that it would be, essentially, forgotten. If it was cost effective to put our trash into space and ship it away, it would be just as easy to send it into the sun. The sun wouldn't even notice a little Earth ship filled with trash coming into it. It would just eat it up like it was nothing. Keep dreaming though, imagination is the key to new ideas!

If you consider the rate of our technological advance we will have had to expand throughout the milky way millions of years from now because our sun will die eventually, but then our technology may let us break through not to other galaxies within this universe but actually to other universes, in the longest view you have to accept this is a logical possibility otherwise what is the point, by the time we can get to other universes in other dimensions we might just be energy anyway, your talking so far into the future. Be positive.

The reproducing bit is kinda fun ;-) As for the rest what the point of living when one day we will die. What is the point of anything when put like that. i believe the alternitive is worse.
Why climb a mountain when you know you will have to climb back down. "Because it's there"1 There is a drive inside us that makes reproduction fun and it also drives us to improve our existance.
The point of doing it is for the sake of doing it, for pleasure, for enrichment or for the thousands of generations who will experiance life, and pleasure and pain in the interim.

you might as well live

The answer to this question is a simple one, depending on the assumption that we were brought into existence with a purpose, and that the Universe in its entirety will indeed collapse into a singularity, for which there is evidence on the contrary. In fact current observations have concluded that the Universe is expanding exponentially and is actually speeding up in its expansion. So the Universe will not collapse into darkness but will forever expand into it.
As to the question of a purpose to human existence, I have to believe that that the answer is whatever you want the purpose to be. Is your purpose to live with a purpose or without one? Existence is not dependent on a purpose, however purpose is dependent on existence. That is the choice all of us have to ask ourselves as intelligent conscious beings. Because to live without purpose is not to live at all. I have made my choice. Have you?

Assuming that statement is true not much. To bring it closer to now, what if you die today? Lights out that's it, or is there something more? The one thing that us humans possess beyond the rest of the creatures is a sense of personal awareness and a longing for significance be it spiritual or wordly.
The bible says that everything that we do on this earth is for nothing, because we going to have to eventually give it up when we die. So to live for the significance of this world is futile especially in the relation of what they believe in regard to enternity...there is none. But, just as you're questioning, we all have that inner voice that drive to believe that there has to be something more then what is here and now.
Sure the world may implode and get sucked it in oblivion, Russia or Korea may nuke us tomorrow. Tomorrow is never promised, but eternity is for those who hold on to God and accept Christ as the bridge between God and man.
Through this drive of significance, people are constantly trying to lift up themselves to the level of the creator but how can you use human means to appeal to an infinite God? God knowing this humbled himself, has knelt down to our level paid the ransom for our trespasses and lifted us up to His level through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
For those who belong to Jesus, we don't fear death, we don't fear the almost infinite possibilities to be anihilated because we know that whether we die today tomorrow or 60 years from now, that we'll be in the presence of the Almighty God and all the tears and pain will be replaced with joy and perfect peace.
People say that they'll die for their faith, but Jesus tells us to die to this world and live for Him.

*laughs*you see that's the question no one can really answer, because humanity is a bunch of hypocrites. We like to leave our mark somewhere, in space, on a planet, somewhere in time it will all fade away eventually nothing last's forever unless you can manage an umoveable indestrucable thing then it'll last forever but until then nothing last's forever

to get as many points on yahoo answer as possible, spend ourselves into debt, and enjoy life while doing so. IN other words, further proof that we need to enjoy today because there are no promises for the future.

A better question would be how many times has it happened before, and what are our chances of surviving long enough for it to happen again.

Using that logic I suppose there is none. There would have to be more in order to have any purpose now wouldn't there?
